The Atlantic Provinces are slowly recovering economically from generations of misfortune, mistakes, and questionable political treatment. With major projects now including offshore energy in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, new hydro power in Labrador (Newfoundland), military shipbuilding now underway in Halifax, along with the deepening research base at universities across the region and new infrastructure investment coming from the Federal government, we can say the future is looking brighter for the region than in many decades. The new trade agreement between Canada and Europe presents new opportunities for Atlantic Canada as Canada’s gateway. And more…

But policy direction, in particular energy policy and options are now crucial in light on commitments to address climate change. In addition there is major political uncertainty in the US, our largest trading partner, regarding term of trade.

Underneath all these developments is the question of What kind of prosperity should the Atlantic provinces be seeking? How can a small, open, economy like ours be a sustainable economy? How can it take take advantage of its assets including location, to develop beyond the extremes of boom and bust cycles, which often beset small regions?

What policies will help most to address these questions?

In particular, since energy and our dependence on imported fuels is one of the most crucial, but unpredictable, levers of economic stability, what direction can and should our energy policy in this region take?

Questions: As a prospective economist, please provide your advice to government on policy and investment in this region which may encourage sustainable economic development here, and in particular the development of energy- its use and development.

Background questions include how can we encourage new investment in hard and soft infrastructure while accepting the very limited financial resources available to our governments. The financial constraints are real, a result of many deficits needed in the region to overcome historic downturns. How should we approach the issue of economic growth vs. sustainability, particularly in the contentious area of energy? Is your view that it’s a matter of economy vs environment, or is that a false dichotomy?

Consider these scenarios:

You are a social worker and just started working at a local mental health agency. Your client is several years older and he or she asks you how old you are.

In a meeting with a much younger client, the teenage girl looks at you and blurts out, “You are too old to understand anything about what I am dealing with.”

How might you react and respond in those two scenarios?

Judgments about someone’s capabilities due to how old they look are made every day. Both young and older people are disrespected due to bias around their perceived lack of abilities. Additionally, these prejudices are often internalized, impacting the way these individuals feel about themselves. This internalized oppression diminishes their sense of self-confidence and self-esteem and often equates to unnecessary self-defined limits. Youth are constantly in a position in which their actions are controlled and their voices are stifled. Similarly, the elderly are ignored, hidden away, and, at worst, abused. They are often targeted for maltreatment and marketing scams due to their perceived vulnerabilities. You will be asked to consider your own experiences with either of these issues and how as a social worker you might mitigate the marginalization of these groups.

Consider your own experiences with ageism and adultism. Did any topic or subtopic related to ageism or adultism you encountered this week surprise you?

He describes the pain as stiffness and occasional shooting and aching pains radiating all over. He denies any swelling of his joints. However, the OTC medications are not working well, and he is here to see whether there are any other options he might try. On physical exam, he has tenderness on palpation on the right and left hips and both knees are positive for crepitus. All blood work is within normal limits. Answer the following questions:

What additional information would you like to have? Does MP need any additional testing?
What possible issues could contribute to his symptoms?
He asks about injections to both knees to increase his comfort. How would you respond to that?

about the problem. For example, you should not write to the President to address a healthcare issue
that needs to be passed in congress. You would want to address the correct Senator or representative
from your state who will be voting on the issue. This is a professional letter, so letter form, grammar and
punctuation is graded, too. This could be to a congressman or woman or to other legislators, to big
business or corporations. Remember, there must be a close nursing link to write this letter. You might
want to look at a professional organization website in order to look for options.
Option B: Write a letter to defend the image of nursing. Most often nursing is portrayed as less than
professional in popular media, TV, advertising, greeting cards, etc. Choose an example and write a
professional letter to the appropriate person to tell them why you think they have portrayed nursing
unprofessionally. Tell them how this affects the image of nursing and provide suggestions to change
