Select an article from a magazine or newspaper that has something in it that pertains to biology. This will serve as the “target article” for this assignment. For instance, you can select an article about medicine, invasive species, nature, conservation, genetic technology, ecology, or any other topic that is related to biology. One purpose of this assignment is to help you become aware of how biology is related to your everyday life.

Write a one to three (1-3) page paper in which you:

Summarize the article in one (1) or more paragraphs, using your own words. Be sure to identify the article using an in-text citation in the body of the paper, as well as a reference in the reference section.
Explain how the article relates to this course. Identify which biological concepts from the course and / or text are relevant to the topic covered in the article. Citing the course text, discuss the ways in which this course does (or doesn’t) provide background information to help you understand the article and the larger issues surrounding it.
Explain why the article caught your attention. Relate the article to your life and to issues that are important to you. Discuss how or if the scientific knowledge about the topic covered in the article affects you directly or indirectly.
Discuss your opinion on how research on this topic should be funded. State whether you think taxpayer monies should support research on this topic or whether such research in this area should be funded by the private sector. Rate the importance of research on this topic, relative to other areas of research.
In addition to the target article, you should use at least one additional resource, such as your textbook or another article. You must have a reference section which contains an APA reference to your chosen article and all other sources. Additionally, you must provide in-text citations (in APA format) to your references in the body of the text. Integrate all sources into your paper using proper techniques of quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing, along with your in-text citations.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.

What should be done with the embryos that are left over at in vitro fertilization (IVF), clinics?

A controversial issue, closely related to cloning, that has caused a lot of debate is the use of embryonic stem cells. One possible application of these cells is that they may be able to supply replacement tissues to treat diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, paralysis due to spinal cord injuries, and other degenerative diseases. The word “embryonic”, has caused fierce opposition to this type of research because embryos are destroyed when the stem cells are removed. Questions that have surfaced in this debate include: When a cell nucleus is transferred to another cell, have we created life? Does a stem cell have the same status as a human? What should be done with the embryos that are left over at in vitro fertilization (IVF), clinics? Advocates argue that the medical benefits of stem cell research would be enormous. Opponents argue that life begins at conception and thus this type of research is abortion.

Based on what you have read, explain why you are for or against stem cell research. How would you explain your position to someone who disagrees with you?

What is a ‘good understanding’?

Imagine that a friend asked you what you studied about human evolution.
Would you be able to tell them the story of human evolution in a way that is basically accurate but clear and interesting?
Where would the gaps in your understanding be?
How would you answer if your friend asked the question ‘That’s all very interesting but what is the relevance of that to psychology?’.
How could you tell the story in such a way that your friend would never need to ask that question?
How can you link your understanding of human evolution with the history of psychology itself? (Hint there are perspectives in our recent lecture on history of psychology which would almost certainly fit nicely with the kind of study of psychology that is part of paleoarchaeology and Wynn’s Cognitive Archaeology).

Whilst human evolution tells us about the pre-history of modern homo sapiens and other homo species, the history of psychology itself as a distinctive discipline has a ‘pre-history’ too, i.e. there is a period before psychology truly became a named field of individual inquiry � this period was presented in terms of mesmerism/hypnosis, spiritualism, and phrenology on the cultural hand, and mental philosophy on the other hand. Mental philosophy itself was about the study of the Will, Human Ethics and of course most importantly involved the study of the Philosophy of Mind.

Think about the ways that Philosophy of Mind differs from the psychological study of the mind (more generally think about how philosophy in general differs from science as a starting clue). How does Cartesian Dualism, which sits right at the transition from Religion as the dominant worldview to the ‘age of science’, enable the transition from philosophy to psychology? Is there any significance to the fact that James, Fechner and Wundt were all trained in medicine or physiology (i.e. biological sciences).

In lecture 7 consider the fact that philosophy hasn’t left psychology � Cognitive Psychology has the philosophy of Functionalism at its core. Clearly then philosophy is still relevant � but in what way? And consider that the notion of modularity, an important concept in Cognitive Psychology applied to modern humans, has also been shown to be useful in understanding human evolution, but how has studying human evolution been useful in understanding modularity?

Asking these kinds of questions, and developing your own answers, will help you write your essay � but the answers have to come from your own engagement with the questions I simply pose. Can you think of other questions? Other answers?
