Process:
There is pre-writing required for this essay.
• It must address an issue on which reasonable people disagree.
• It must clearly explain the issue.
• It must be directed towards a reading audience that disagrees with your position.
• It must clearly indicate your position and support that position with sound reasoning and solid evidence.
• You must anticipate possible counter-arguments and either accommodate or refute them.
For this paper, you must maintain a non-aggressive, persuasive tone because your audience must be convinced to change their minds and agree with your position.
Topics: Choose one of the topics and write an essay that provides your own clearly developed position on the issue.

• You may want to look through the newspaper to get the different perspectives on the issues, but DO NOT copy those ideas word for word. Rely on your own ideas in developing your opinions.
Outline for traditional arguments (which you should also follow with a satire):
I. Introduction explains the issue. It must contain (usually as the last
sentence) a thesis that states your position.
II. Background provides essential information about the issue.
III. Argument presents the reasons and evidence to support your position.
IV. Counter-argument shows why those who disagree with you are wrong.
V. Conclusion reiterates why your position is the correct one and makes a final appeal
to your reader.
II, III, and IV don’t necessarily have to be separated. Some background may be provided as you present reasons for your position, as might a counter-argument.
