Outline a design for an RCT that has the potential to address a novel question within the field of development economics. The RCT Design will not provide an actual answer to a research question. Therefore, grade will depend on whether the design, if it were run, would provide with the data needed to provide a complete answer the research question. In particular, the design should be able to identity the mechanism behind any treatment effect – that is, instead of simply identifying ”Treatment X had a positive effect on education outcomes” the design should be able to identify that ”Treatment X had a positive effect on education outcomes, because of Y.”The RCT Design should include the following elements:• The research question, including a structured argument for why this question is an unanswered, but salient question for development economics, and a brief overview of the related literature.• Specific hypotheses that will be tested by the RCT, including a hypothesis regarding mechanism.• The RCT design, which will include:o A description of the intervention including an overview of the specific setting / population in which the research will be conducted and why it is a good setting in which to test the hypothesis.o A description of outcome and mechanism measurement and, ifpossible, a discussion of statistical power (which may be done using EGAP’s online power calculator)o A discussion of how common problems in RCTs (attrition, non- compliance, missing data) will be addressed / mitigated• An overview of how the data will be analyzed –the design should clearly state which findings would confirm or reject your hypotheses.IMPORTANT: To get a sense of recent RCT designs, we encourage you to have a look at the AEA RCT registry (https://www.socialscienceregistry.org/) as well as EGAP’s design registry (http://egap.org/design-registrations).
