Discussion: Preparing for Professional Transitions

Consider the following scenario:

Marcus recalls the beginning of his career, when he started as a nurse at Grand View Hospital. He had heard the organization was soliciting proposals from various companies so they could weigh the pros and cons associated with adopting a new health information technology system. He has been curious about the request for proposal (RFP) process ever since. Now, as he looks forward to new professional opportunities, he would like to ensure that he develops the skills and expertise needed to formulate an RFP.

What are your professional aims? How can you apply what you have learned in your coursework to your practicum setting? How will you leverage your experiences in the practicum to facilitate your development as a nurse leader-manager or informaticist?

In this Discussion, you reflect on your aspirations and consider the transitions that may be required to achieve them. You identify professional development objectives and evaluate opportunities for achieving them through your experiences in the practicum.

Think about the professional role changes you have been undergoing or that you may undertake following completion of this MSN program.

Review the information related to professional development and role change in the Learning Resources, and conduct additional research as necessary to address any questions or concerns you may have.

Consider the following questions:

What types of professional positions interest you? Are they significantly different from the types of positions you have held in the past? If so, how?

What challenges are you likely to encounter as you transition into a new role?

What resources could help you to manage this change? Consider your inner resources (e.g., drawing on previous experiences, stress management), resources available to you through your relationships with others, and institutional supports.

Consider how you could use this Practicum Experience to apply what you have learned and enhance or acquire specialization skills and knowledge, regardless of whether you intend to change roles or stay in your current position for the time being.

Review the NURS 6600 Course Outcomes listed in the Syllabus. Determine how your experiences in the practicum could help you to achieve one or more of these outcomes.

Review the information in the Introduction to the Practicum (in this week’s Practicum area) and the School of Nursing Practicum Manual as necessary to ensure you have a clear understanding of the practicum requirements.

Review the suggestions for developing effective learning objectives provided in the Learning Resources.

CRITICAL THINKING (define and apply two concepts) — 10 pts.

Task: Psychology is a science. Critical thinking is vital to understand psychology theories, research, and practice. Competency in social science rests on good critical thinking skills. You have to be able to unpack suppositions, assumptions, unstated implications, claims and assertions, and meaning behind claims. How well have you grasped the application of critical thinking during your undergraduate studies?

Psychology emerged out of the discipline of philosophy. We use concepts from philosophy to ground our critiques arguments. Define two terms that are examples of concepts useful for critical thinking. Search philosophy, critical thinking literature, or argument and analysis literature. You can use a dictionary of philosophy or a source book on critical thinking concepts.

The two concepts you define should be helpful to critique and unpack arguments in psychology. For example, the concept of “slippery slope”. After you define the term give an example on how the concept you defined might be useful to unpack ideas and arguments in psychology, such as research claims or that can apply to clinical practice. Consider a therapist’s use of a therapeutic modality, or claims of a specific theory in psychology, or the use of research methods. You don’t have to locate an article that uses the concept.

Explain how you would apply the term to unpack assertions, assumptions, presuppositions in psychology. Your task is original to you when you make the connection between a concept (such as slippery slope) in psychology to unpack suppositions. This task shows your ability to apply critical thinking and argue in psychology. Attach one article on critical thinking with a succinct summary. Tip: Search the literature in philosophy, psychology, sociology, political scien

Debates within Political Psychology

Debates within Political Psychology
1. Pick any one of the major theories of human nature discussed at the beginning of the course. Develop its contribution to political psychology. What phenomena does it most help to explain? What phenomena is it less effective in explaining?

2. A central debate within political psychology has always been the extent to which political actors are ?rational? or ?irrational.? Describe rational choice theory as a theory of political behavior. What are the main challenges to it from research in political psychology? In what respects does it hold up better? Where do you come out on this debate? Why?

3. Evaluate Houghton?s distinction between situations and dispositions as a clarifying theme in the study of political psychology. Where does it help the most? What other important distinctions might it obscure?

4. Where does political psychology make the strongest contribution to understanding political behavior? Where is it least effective? Why?

Part B: Applications of political psychology to specific political problems

1. One running debate in political psychology is the extent to which political elites can and do manipulate the general public, as opposed to the extent to which they must pander to the preferences of the mass public. Put another way, is the mass public mainly responsive to elite initiatives or are elites? actions strongly constrained by public opinion, in such areas as policy clashes (racial backlash, health reform) or even mass violence (genocide, war). Discuss this question critically, drawing broadly and specifically upon material from throughout the course.

2. The role of social class in Americans? political attitudes has long been debated. How has research and theory on this topic changed over time? What are the main schools of thought today? How are they similar and how do they differ? Be sensitive to possible regional and issue differences.
3. Several aspects of the course have dealt with debates over increased ideological and partisan polarization in American society. Relevant are both those who directly address polarization and aspects of political psychology that are more indirectly implicated (e.g., democratic competence, ideological thinking, the psychology of party identification). Develop this debate. Be specific about the sources you are drawing on. Where do you come out?

4. Just 48 years ago, the Civil Rights Act was passed, and a year later, both the Voting Rights Act and major immigration liberalization. To what extent, and how, have the roles of race/ethnicity and racism/prejudice in American politics changed since then? What parallels and differences exist between the historic conflict between blacks and whites and the consequences of the increased flow of new immigrants to the US?

How many autoimmunity tests per year will have to be performed on the array machine to break even? The Purchase of Health Care Equipment Project.

How many autoimmunity tests per year will have to be performed on the array machine to break even? The Purchase of Health Care Equipment Project.

Cost Analysis: The Purchase of Health Care Equipment ProjectAn equipment acquisition proposal was being considered by a large health care organization, XYZ Health Care. The array machine will enable the hospital to perform autoimmunity tests (for immunoglobulins G, M, and A and complements C3 and C4) in-house rather than sending them to a reference laboratory. Test turnaround time is expected to decrease by 2 days. The array machine costs $50,000, with a useful life of 5 years. The depreciation schedule will be $10,000/year. The expected volume for tests is one of each of the five autoimmunity tests per day. Having the tests done by the reference laboratory costs the hospital an average of $10/test. The hospital’s average charge to patients is $20/test. If the array machine is acquired and the tests done in-house, the costs of reagents would average $2/test. The array machine can run a maximum of 40 patient samples and perform 20 different tests on each sample every 2 hours. Except in extraordinary circumstances, tests would be run Monday through Saturday. The machine requires approximately 1 hour of technician time (valued at $15/hour) each day to calibrate it, to conduct a test run for control purposes and to perform general maintenance. This is a fixed cost because it does not vary by volume. Technician setup time to run tests is negligible. Beyond the five autoimmunity tests the laboratory wants to perform in-house, the machine can also perform apolipoprotein cardiac profiles that are currently done on equipment in the clinical chemistry department. The array machine can provide a quantitative measure and not just the positive or negative indicator that the clinical chemistry department’s current equipment gives.Deliverables: The CEO of XYZ Health Care has hired your team as consultants to prepare a report addressing the following questions listed below.•How many autoimmunity tests per year will have to be performed on the array machine to break even?•Given the present volume of tests, would there be an annual net contribution and, if so, how much?•If half of the patients have Medicare coverage (DRG reimbursement includes all tests), would the laboratory break even on the equipment? If not, should the equipment be acquired anyway?

Write a 3–4-page assessment in which you examine the relationship between behavior and attitude and apply one theory to support your position.

Attitudes help guide behavior, although sometimes people act in ways that contradict their attitudes (Baumeister & Bushman, 2014). Some have said that attitudes are directly related to behavior; others say there is no strong relationship between attitude and behavior. Examining theories of how people develop attitudes and perceptions can lead to heightened self-awareness.
