State of Florida policies) Based on the framework , you are to critically analyze a recently enacted state policy. This should be something you have seen show up in the news, an issue you are interested in, or a policy that could have direct impact on your life. It can be anything so long as it has been voted on by your state’s legislative branch, has been approved by the executive office, and has been signed into law. To make your work a little easier, you’ll likely want to choose something that has had media/public attention and is a broad enough issue that you can find scholarly sources to provide background information. Some examples of state issues include: fracking, legalization of medical marijuana, mental health services, state budget and spending, etc.

In this 5-7 page analysis you should:

Establish the history of the issue
Identify the major policy concepts/contexts
Identify the stakeholders
Review the development and implementation of the policy (what was the policymaking process?/policy formulation, policy legitimation, policy implementation, policy evaluation, and policy change) (one or more must or all must be included in paper)
Evaluate the effectiveness of the policy and its ability to meet stated goals (if possible)(economic efficiency, ethical, effectiveness, and equity)
Provide an analysis with recommendations for improving or modifying the policy (be sure to include your recommendations for adjustments, expansion or alternatives)(type of policy analysis: scientific, professional, and political)
Situate your analysis in the contemporary policy literature.

Ethical Dimensions of Research Studies

Ethical Dimensions of Research Studies
In the best-selling book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (Skloot, 2010), the author highlights the true story of an African-American woman who died in 1951 from cervical cancer. What makes her story unique is that prior to her death, cells from her tumor were removed and successfully grown in a petri dish. This was the first time scientists were able to successfully replicate cells outside the body, and it is estimated that billions of Lacks’ cells have been used in medical research. However, Henrietta Lacks was never asked for permission to take a sample and her family was never made aware of the widespread use of her cells. Although the culturing of her cells has been pivotal for advancing research, strong ethical concerns later arose about using these cells without patient or family approval.
This week’s readings describe historical examples of unethical research, such as a study of syphilis among African-American men in which treatment was withheld and a study in which live cancer cells were injected into elderly patients. Today, stricter controls that seek to protect study participants are placed on researchers, but breaches still occur. Careful attention must be given toward preventing unethical behavior. In this Discussion, you explore ethical considerations and issues in research.

RESPOND TO A COLLEAGUE’S INTERVENTION CHOICE THAT DIFFERS FROM YOURS. CONTRAST THE UNDERLYING THEORIES OF THE TWO INTERVENTIONS.

RESPONSE 1
Respond to a colleague’s intervention choice that differs from yours. Contrast the underlying theories of the two interventions.

Colleague 1: Amanda

he Levy family is struggling with Jakes PTSD. Jake was a veteran who has returned to civilian life and is now trying to cope with the trauma and the acclimation back into a daily routine with his family. Jason is isolating himself from his family by spending time alone in a dark room watching television and drinking alcohol to the point of being drunk. He wakes up every morning with a hangover, and this is now affecting his ability to go to work and provide for the family. Mrs. Levy is concerned with his behavior and tells Jason that the children are aware that he is “sick” every morning sue to his excessive drinking (Laureate Education, 2013). It is evident that Jake is not sleeping, drinking excessively to the point of being hungover the next day and from depression and anxiety, which is evident in his isolation from the family. Evidence-based practice when working with clients who have PTSD and family members who are feeling the effects of it is the most effective form of treatment. Choosing which EBP to apply toward the family will depend on the social worker’s preference and the issues that the family is facing. It will also be determined by the personalities and age range of the family members.

In the case of the Levy family the EBP I chose to use to help the family would be solution focused brief therapy. SFBT uses the strength approach and the assumption that clients have the knowledge, strength, skills, and insights to solve their own problems (Holosko,2013). It is essential that the social worker is also mindful of the four underlying assumptions of this therapy that include: realizing that each client and family is unique, clients have the strengths and resources to achieve goals. Change within the family, client and situation are always evolving and that sessions with clients should focus on the present and the future, not the past. I would use this because of the client needs to work on issues of alcoholism, depression, and anxiety that is being caused by the PTSD now. He also needs to be able to realize how this will impact his future with his family if he does not get help. Mrs. Levy also needs to let go of the past and focus on the present and the future. In the media piece, she mentions Jake being the person that he used to be. Mrs. Levy needs to realize that Jake will forever be changed by his experiences. I believe that bringing the children into this therapy also prepares them for the father they have now and give them a better understanding of what he is going through. The SFBT model is also client directed and involved meaning that the goals are stated by the client, and the social worker and the client come up with different possibilities in order to achieve these goals.
