Assignment 1 –Trends
(40% of the course grade)

You are required to produce an infographic that will demonstrate your ability to
identify current trends and analyse the impacts these trends will have on society. The
trends can either be social, cultural or technological. Infographics are mainly used to
convey information through the use of a judicious combination of text (words) and/or
graphic images (symbols or pictures). The infographic must convey its message with
immediacy and purpose. Use the following guidelines to assist you in the design
process.

Guidelines:

1. Chosen Trend: A good starting point is to identify an area of interest or an area
that you think is of concern i.e. recent incidences or activities in the country or
the globe. For example, current technological trends, wearable technology,
autonomous vehicles, social media, health problems, travel. Once you have
decided on a topic start collecting data and materials that can support your topic
and help you identify the current trend. Clearly define the trend you have chosen
to explore, explaining its significance. Provide data, statistics, graphics to
showcase the identified trend. (15 marks)

2. Societal Impacts: Identify the postulated impacts the identified trend will have
on society or is currently having. (15 marks)

3. Design: The Infographic should be both informative and attractive therefore
appropriate design and planning is essential. A good blend of images or graphics
and text is highly recommended. There is no word limit but it has to have enough
information in it to get you good marks. (5 marks)

4. Referencing: You must acknowledge all sources of information that you have
used. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. This should be page 2 of the infographic.
(5 marks)

Assignment Due Date: Friday, 8 September 2017.
The completed poster should be uploaded as a PDF file onto the ‘ePoster Dropbox’
on Moodle.

Resources: EEOC website, U.S. Court System website, and EEO 101: The Basic Theories of Employment Discrimination

Search the following key terms: discrimination complaint process, litigation process, mediation process, and dispute resolution.

John identifies as a Hispanic employee in a private sector organization. He is regularly called an “idiot” by his supervisor. The supervisor has hardly ever called non-Hispanic employees derogatory names. Finally, the supervisor starts calling John an inflammatory name that is known to be derogatory to Hispanics. John now finds his work environment intolerable though his supervisor has no intention to demote or fire John for any reason. John, however, wants to file a discrimination complaint against his employer. He went to his HR department first, but was dissatisfied with their lack of help.

Prepare a 700- to 1,050-word paper written in the third person voice in which you analyze and explain the discrimination complaint and civil litigation process as it would potentially apply to John and his employer.

What are the elements of a hostile work environment harassment claim?
Can John potentially satisfy the elements of a hostile work environment harassment claim?
Does his employer have any defense for the supervisor’s conduct?
Identify whether John can make a prima facie case of hostile work environment by identifying the elements required to bring a cause of action for discrimination.

Explain how the complaint process begins with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and proceeds with a right-to-sue letter through the civil litigation process from the state level up to the U. S. Supreme Court.

Include a discussion on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other relevant aspects addressing discrimination complaints and disputes in the workplace.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines, including using headings to appropriately signal topics to keep your document organized.

You compare guidelines outlined in the WHI study to current best practices for assessing and managing conditions.

You compare guidelines outlined in the WHI study to current best practices for assessing and managing conditions.

For over 20 years, the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study has conducted research trials to examine factors that impact risks and development of conditions that impact women such as heart disease, breast and colorectal cancer, and osteoporotic fractures in postmenopausal women. Health care providers use results from these trials to develop guidelines for delivering care to patients. In your role in clinical settings, you must be familiar with these guidelines, and you must be aware that through clinical practice, guidelines frequently evolve and change. Often, what is considered a best practice today might not be a best practice in the future. For this Assignment, you compare guidelines outlined in the WHI study to current best practices for assessing and managing conditions. To prepare:
•Review the Women’s Health Initiative article in this week’s Learning Resources.

Select one disorder presented in this study.

Locate and select a research article that addresses current best practices for assessing and managing the disorder you selected. Be sure that the research article you select is from a reputable source.

•Consider the similarities and differences between the best practices presented in the WHI study and the article you selected. Think about the potential impact of differences in best practices on women’s health.

•Consider whether the best practices in the article you selected should be used in clinical practice.

To complete: Write a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:
•Describe the disorder you selected from the Women’s Health Initiative study.
•Explain the current best practices for assessing and managing this disorder as suggested in the research article you selected.
•Compare the best practices presented in the WHI study to the current best practices presented in the article. Explain how the differences in best practices might impact women’s health.
•Explain whether you think the current best practices in the article you selected should be used in clinical practice. Support your position with evidence-based research. Note: The School of Nursing requires that all papers submitted include a title page, introduction, summary, and references.

My selected disorder is breast cancer.

Data Analysis.Discuss why it is important for nurses to understand the basics of these statistical methods.

Discussion: Data Analysis—Small Group DiscussionAs a nurse engaged in evidence-based practice, it is important to recognize how statistics and other data analysis tools are used to generate and assess evidence. Most nurses need only a foundational understanding of statistical tools and terminology to understand the majority of research studies. As a nurse, you should be able to recognize the most commonly used statistical tests, how and when they are used, and how significance is determined. In this Discussion, you examine different types of statistics and statistical tests, when and why these particular tests would be selected for use, and, most importantly, what the results indicate. To this end, you will be assigned to a group by Day 1 of this week. Each group will be assigned one of the five chapters listed in this week’s Learning Resources and will develop a study sheet on their chapter that will be shared with the other groups.Review the information in your assigned chapter. As a group, develop a 1-page study sheet that includes the following:The key concepts of the chapter: Focus on the basic concepts that are important for nurses to understand as they review research studies.A description of the statistical methods covered in the chapter, what they measure, and under what circumstances they are used. Identify examples of how the statistical methods have been used in research studies. An explanation of the key statistical tests and how they measure significance (if applicable).Note: This should be a collaborative effort, with each member of the group making contributions to the design and content of the study sheet. Use the Groups link on the left navigation bar to collaborate with your group. When you have developed your 1-page study sheet, select one member to post it to the Week 9 Discussion Forum so that the rest of your colleagues can access it.To prepare:By Day 5Post your group’s study sheet.
