ESSAY 2
Instructions
Topic for Paper 2: How does a literary element help the reader to understand the theme of short stories?
Objectives:
To demonstrate understanding of a literary element through its application to two short stories
To develop analysis by applying a literary element to demonstrate a theme of a piece of literature
To synthesize material from two sources into a clear and logically organized presentation
To demonstrate control over sentence level construction by writing in standard American English
To demonstrate control over documentation of intext
source material and developing a Work Cited page in the style of
MLA formatting
To demonstrate metacognition in the process of writing
General Instructions:
In Paper 1, you developed an initial thesis statement that considered how a theme is shown in a short story. In Paper 2,
you will be building on that discussion by considering and analyzing a second story. You will be developing a
comparison/contrast paper that focuses on synthesizing material from Paper 1 and your stories as well as introducing a
literary element. You will be using the feedback you received on Paper 1 from your instructor to help you refine the
presentation of content in Paper 2.
For Paper 2, review the selection of stories and choose another story that would work with your previously chosen theme
and short story.
Thesis: Your thesis statement should include both stories, the element, and the theme. You will work on the thesis, pattern
of organization, and outline in the Week 5 discussion. Topic sentences for the outline will also be reviewed.
Development: The development or body of the paper will focus on analyzing how the literary element connects to the
meaning of the theme in both stories. During Weeks 6, 7, and 8, in the discussions, you will review the following writing
strategies to develop your paper:
development of body paragraphs that include comparison/contrast and synthesis (including the introduction of the new
material from your second story to your discussion of the first story from Paper 1 and the comparing and contrasting of the
element in the two stories)
development and management of the “they say/I say” components for integration of multiple sources
inclusion of demonstrable claims and warrants
using keywords of lengthy quotations as development
providing topic sentences and transition to ensure a unified structure
Sentence Level and MLA: Your writing should be carefully proofed for sentencelevel
concerns. It should be formatted and
documented according to MLA documentation in the form of parenthetical citations and a Works Cited page (work from an
anthology). Throughout the writing of Paper 2, you will be applying these grammatical and documentation skills you
learned from Paper 1 to Paper 2.
Reminder: As in Paper 1, remember that your reader has read the story and is familiar with the literary elements. You do
not have to spend time on summary or providing definitions of your chosen element. Instead, your development should
explain and analyze how the element helps your reader understand the theme.
Reflection: When complete, upload your work to the Assignment Folder within the link “Paper 2” by the deadline. On a
separate page of your submission, provide an overview of your writing process for this paper. Of particular note, include
how your writing process integrated what you learned in writing Paper 1 to Paper 2.
Word Count: 8001,000
words
I. STYLE GUIDELINES: APPLY THE MODERN LANGUAGE ASSOCIATION (MLA) STYLE GUIDELINES TO YOUR ESSAY:
Format, Documentation and Citation. (NOTE: other disciplines may use other style guidelines. The important thing to learn
is to apply the appropriate guidelines in any course. MLA is the standard for English courses and courses in modern
foreign languages).
For specific details of MLA style guidelines go to: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/74
Use MLA style guidelines to:
1) Format your paper’s manuscript
2) Use and format intext

Vessey et al. 2009).

For this assignment, you are required to

(1) examine the evidence pertaining to healthy workplaces and the impact of workplaces on the mental wellbeing of nurses and

(2) discuss two strategies that might be implemented to improve mental health promotion in the nursing workplace.

Examine the effectiveness of a quality management plan in a given healthcare setting.
The project is modeled on the Shewhart Cycle (Plan, Do, Check, Act). You will modify the Shewhart Cycle to make it applicable to your selected healthcare service or program.

Seek additional resources that will help you understand the process being studied as well as planning and quality improvement in general. You can visit the following link for more details on a quality process improvement plan:

www.goleansixsigma.com

Click Resources and then select Lean Six Sigma Tools. Review the steps in sequence; they provide direction to a quality process improvement plan. While you do not need to use the steps in sequence, they provide direction, as given below:

Define: This step describes the importance of the problem within the organization.
Measure: This step relates to the impact of the current condition and target goals for improvement.
Analyze: This step relates to understanding work flow mapping and the value stream as well as understanding root cause analysis (RCA).
Improve: This step identifies improvements to consider in the implementation of change.
Control: This step is about sustainability of change.
Tasks:

Complete a part of the Plan step of the cycle.
Describe the environment, the organization, and the department or program within the organization that is the basis for your project. Describe the selected healthcare setting, specifically its service, staff, equipment, and patients. Identify and describe the scope and nature of the problem.
Assess the environment using strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis. Interview some stakeholders, such as managers, staff, or customers. Use the interview information to conduct the SWOT analysis. You may also summarize or quote any important or interesting information gathered during the interview.
Select one of the weaknesses determined by the SWOT analysis to create a plan for improvement.

Why are electronic orders and results important? How will you use them in your career? In this unit, you were introduced to electronic orders, problem lists, lab results, and body mass index.

In this unit, you were introduced to electronic orders, problem lists, lab results, and body mass index. For this assignment, you will get to demonstrate the skills you have learned by completing exercises using the Quippe software in the MyHealthProfessionsLab located in Blackboard.

First, use the instructions for “Exercise 6G: Discharging a Patient with Deep Vein Thrombosis” on page 245 of your textbook and “Exercise 7H: Patient with Upper Abdominal Chest Pain” on page 298 of your textbook to complete these exercises in the MyHealthProfessionsLab. Note: You do not have to complete step 4 in Exercise 6G or step 7 in Exercise 7H because you are not actually submitting the work in the lab.

After completing the exercises, compose a reflection paper about your experience that applies what you have learned in this unit. In your paper, be sure to include the following:

How was your overall experience using the software to document the patient encounter? Did you experience any issues while using the software?

Were you able to successfully complete the hospital discharge instructions? What do you feel was most beneficial about this exercise?

How do you feel that using problems lists can help you determine the education needed for a patient? What specific skills do you feel you have mastered? What skills do you need to improve?

Why are electronic orders and results important? How will you use them in your career?
