One of the best ways to reach diverse learners in your classroom is to let them know you care. One way to let them know you care is by giving them time to express themselves. This can be done through group conversations, projects, or helping with extra fun tasks in the classroom. I like to have a share time where students can bring items from home. These items tells us something about them or their family. Most students love to talk about themselves and the share project is a good way to accomplish that goal.

For Part 2 of your Research Paper project you will be submitting an annotated bibliography (or a set of research notes that includes complete references). Whichever you choose, your submission should include the following:

Annotated Bibliography or Reading Notes:

  • Summary: Brief summary (around 250 words) of where your research stands at present. Identify:
    • Parts of the process that you feel you’ve made substantial progress on
    • Major tasks or obstacles that still lie ahead
    • Any other thoughts and reflections at this stage
  • Complete APA-style references – for at least five sources. Before or right after each set of notes is fine.

Create an introduction. This first paragraph should include a lead in and thesis statement and clearly present the main idea of your position paper. Many writers prefer to place the thesis at the end of the first paragraph, but this doesn’t have to be the case.

Explain your view. Tell the reader why you’re taking the position you’ve chosen and offer evidence supporting your opinion. Be sure to present the information in a logical order and avoid making any statements that lack obvious support. Make them understand why you think the way you do.

Present a counter-argument. Pick a problem that someone against your views would bring up. Make sure you present it clearly and give the reasoning behind the counter-argument as well. Researching opposing position papers and viewpoints can help make this step easier.

Declare a resolution to the problem. Take a paragraph to explain why the counter-argument doesn’t apply and reaffirm your view. Describe why the counter-argument doesn’t hold up and why your ideas are better.

End with a conclusion paragraph. In a conclusion paragraph, you should restate your thesis and summarize the position paper’s main ideas. Be sure to rewrite your ideas so that you’re not just repeating the exact same thing. Once again, restate your position.
