Assignment 2: Errors in Reasoning

In this assignment, you will select one of the claims listed below. Using what you know about the topic, describe at least four claims that might commonly be made that display some of the errors in reasoning covered in this module’s readings. You may have to do a bit of research to find popular positions on these topics.

For example, if the claim is: Children should not be allowed to play violent video games.

Then four common claims about the subject might be:

1. Children have always played violent games and they turned out okay.

2. Dr. Dre says that violent video games are okay.

3. Everybody knows that violent video games don’t cause problems.

4. Many countries banned violent video games and they have higher crime rates than we do.

And the errors they represent might be:

1. Children have always played violent games and they turned out okay (appeal to tradition and false analogy).

2. Dr. Dre says that violent video games are okay (argument by mistaken authority).

3. Everybody knows that violent video games don’t cause problems (appeal to common belief).

4. Many countries banned violent video games and they have higher crime rates than we do (post hoc ergo propter hoc).

Because

1. Any sentence that talks about how we have always done something as a way to justify doing it is an appeal to tradition.

2. The claim looks like it comes from an authority, but Dr. Dre is a musician, not a doctor.

3. Any claim that says that everyone knows something as a way to justify doing it is an appeal to common belief.

4. Showing that two things happened (that video games are accepted and crime is up) does not prove that the two things are related or that the first caused the second; this is called post hoc ergo propter hoc, which means after this, so because of this.

Select one of these topics. Using what you know about the topic and additional research you conduct, describe at least four claims that might commonly be made that display some of the errors in reasoning covered in this module’s readings.

1. Should people under 18 be subjected to legal curfews or restricted driving privileges?

2. Should libraries be required to install filtering software or otherwise censor the materials that they provide?

3. Should insurance companies be required to pay for breast reconstruction, birth control pills, or Viagra?

4. Should the use of camera phones be banned in gymnasiums or other locations?

5 question need answeres

ANSWER THE QUESTION .PLEASE NUMBER  THE QUESTION , THERE IS NO WORK COUNT JUST HAVE TO ANSWER THE QUESTION.

The holy days set the rhythm of life in Judaism.  This was especially true in ancient Israel.  The reason that the worksheet asks you to mark the season of each holy day is that most of them are based on the agricultural lifestyle that dominated their thoughts and actions.  Several of the feasts were “pilgrim feasts”.

1-Which of the holy days are Pilgrim Feasts and what is important about these?

What was your favorite holy day to learn about and why?

Judaism is a monotheistic religion (as are Christianity and Islam)

2-What does this mean for Judaism?  When and how did this develop?  What are the implications of a monotheistic worldview?

It is these ideas and others that are the basis of the Judeo-Christian worldview and ethics, but they are not the worldview of other religions.  Other religions do not see mankind as the special work of a Creator.

3-What are some of the other religious worldview options? What differences in ethics result when one sees all life being interconnected and this connection is an impersonal force, as opposed to all life being the work of a Creator with man as the pinnacle?

Speaking of Abraham, in the account of Abraham’s genealogy in Genesis, there seems to be a discrepancy.  It says that his ancestors lived beyond 400 years.  Then in Genesis 25:7-8 it says, Abraham lived 175 years.  Then he took his last breath, and died at a very old age.  After a long and full life, he joined his ancestors in death.

What is the discrepancy?  Well, it says Abraham died at a very old age.  How could he be considered “old and full of years” if his great-great-great grand-father is still alive at 400+ years?  Either there is a problem with the years or it is inaccurate that he is old.

4-Do you think I found a mistake in the Bible?

5-What is the Jewish understanding of holiness?

  2. Compare the potential opportunities and challenges of a state’s decision to opt into the Medicaid expansion.
  3. Explore two (2) alternate approaches to expanding access to care that have been implemented or considered by states opting out of Medicaid expansion. Compare and contrast the two (2) alternate approaches to the Medicaid expansion initiative.

Clay Shirky: Transforming government through the internet

As we look at various scholars and journalists who investigate the effects of social media and other digital technologies, you’ll notice that some folks are more worried about the negative influence on human interaction while others focus on the possibilities for progress of various kinds, including enhancing democracy.

Clay Shirky is one of the observers who lands squarely in the latter category.  While not ignoring the potential for misuse, his study of history leads him to believe that the societal changes that occur when new media are introduced are initially chaotic because there are more ideas out there for people to disagree with – and this is not a bad thing.  In fact, he describes the study of social media – what we’re doing in this course – as “watching people argue.”  He’s interested in the development of technological tools that facilitate “better” arguments.

What does he mean by this?  What else struck you in his talk, and what connections do you see with what you’re reading in Kovarik’s book?

(Like many TED talks, this one has a lot of information and ideas packed into a short presentation, so it merits either a second watch or a review of the transcript.)

Your first reply to this Forum is due Thursday, May 25th.  You will have a week to continue the discussion after that.
