Describe a department or unit within a health care organization using systems theory terminology.
Assignment: Application: Systems Theory

As noted in the Learning Resources, systems theory provides a meaningful and beneficial means of examining challenges in health care organizations. To do this effectively, however, it is essential to assess all system components, as some may be relatively healthy while others are problematic.

For this Assignment, you apply systems theory to the examination of a problem in a department or a unit within a health care organization. (Note: You may use the same problem you identified for the Discussion as long as it meets the criteria for this assignment.)

To prepare:

Review the Meyer article, “Nursing Services Delivery Theory: An Open System Approach,” in this week’s Learning Resources. Focus especially on the information presented in Table 1 (p. 2831) and Figure 2 (p. 2833).
Reflect on your organization or one with which you are familiar. Within a particular department or unit in this organization, identify a problem the staff is encountering.
Using Table 1 in the Meyer article as a guide, analyze the department or unit, identifying inputs, throughput, output, cycles of events, and negative feedback. Consider whether the problem you have selected relates to input, throughput, output, cycles of events, and/or negative feedback.
Think about how you could address the problem: Consider what a desired outcome would be, then formulate related goals and objectives, and translate those goals into policies and procedures.
Research professional standards that are pertinent to your identified problem.
Reflect on the organization’s mission statement and values. In addition, consider how addressing this problem would uphold the mission and values, while improving the organizational culture and climate. (Depending on the organization you have selected, you may have explored these in the Week 1 Discussion.)

To complete:

By Day 7

Write a 4- to 5-page paper (page count does not include title and reference page) that addresses the following:

Describe a department or unit within a health care organization using systems theory terminology. Include a description of inputs, throughput, output, cycles of events, and negative feedback.
Describe the problem you identified within the department or unit using an open- systems approach, and state where the problem exists using the systems theory model (input, throughput, output, cycles of events, or negative feedback).
Based on this information, explain how you would address the problem as follows:
Formulate a desired outcome.
Identify goals and objectives that would facilitate that outcome.
Translate those goals and objectives into policies and procedures for the department or unit.
Describe relevant professional standards.
Explain how your proposed resolution to the problem would uphold the organization’s mission and values and improve the culture and climate.

Abstract

There are many diverse forms of human sexuality that comprise a range of behaviors, historical periods and sexual expressions that are varied across cultures. Yet we can say that the basic principles of human sexuality are universal and are an integral part of human beings. Sex is the key component and purpose of human existence from love, to procreation to family. This essay will look at human sexuality from how love can be a prerequisite for good sex and also on sexuality among the older people.

Introduction

Human sexuality is the understanding of the differences in gender and the capability to have erotic responses and experiences. It can also be the way a person is sexually attracted to someone else be it to all gender identities, to the opposite sex, same sex, either sex or just not being sexually attracted to any group or person. Usually a person’s sexual activity heightens at puberty (Carlson, Neil and Heth, 2007). There are quite a number of theories that deal with human sexuality such as that of Sigmund Freud which aids in the understanding of sexuality. The evolutionary point of view on human mating as well as the sexual strategies theory and social learning theory give another view point on sexuality (Buss and Schmitt). Human sexuality also has socio cultural aspects where it denotes the historical developments as well the religious belief associated with sexuality including the Jewish and Christian views on sexual pleasure. Human sexuality also deals with issues of sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) and methods of birth control. Gender and sexuality are intertwined as it is the defining characteristic for every person. Sexuality encompasses sex, pleasure, gender identities, intimacy, eroticism, sexual orientations and reproduction. It is understood and expressed in our desires, thoughts, beliefs, fantasies, attitudes, roles, practices, behavior and relationships. Sexuality has some bearing on the interaction of the psychological, biological, economic, cultural, social, political legal, religious, ethical, historical and spiritual factors.

Deep love is a prerequisite for good sex.

When a new relationship is being formed a person should put sex at the back of the burner and give this new relationship a chance to grow and develop and see if intimacy will be achieved. If intimacy is achieved then the idea of love will be established and you will know whether love is a possibility or not. If it is considered to be a possibility then sex can be introduced into the mix. Taking time to build a relationship through first giving love a chance then sex later creates a strong bond where there is potential for a lasting relationship.

According to the triangular theory of love developed by psychologist Robert Sternberg, there are three components of love that include intimacy, passion and commitment. The level of love that one experiences relies on the absolute strength of the three components of love. These three elements denote the types and stages of love that can be explained with the different combinations of these three components of love. Without these three then a relationship cannot survive. Having a good relationship that is based on love therefore means that a relationship will prosper and in turn this means that there will be a good sexual understanding in the relationship.

Diagram of the triangular theory of love

Liking according to Sternberg characterizes true friendships where a person feels some warmth and closeness with another person but is not a long term commitment. Infatuated love on the other hand is what can be termed as love at first sight where there is no intimacy and where love can disappear suddenly. Empty love is that kind of love where a stronger love deteriorates but the commitment is still present. The love and intimacy however still exist. Romantic love is where the individuals are bound emotionally and physically through arousal. Compassionate love normally exists in marriages where the passion is lost but the commitment and affection still exist. Fatuous love is where it is exemplified by a whirlwind courtship that results to marriage and that which commitment is motivated by passion. Consummate love is the ideal love in an ideal relationship where very few achieve. Sternberg however cautions that maintaining this kind of love is even harder than achieving it.

Love, intimacy and sex

Intimacy and sex is not the same thing a

Assess the approaches you would use to monitor the behavior of each employee What are the legal implications? How would you evaluate the effectiveness of your approach?
Employee #1

Jimmy Brown is a manager with Solomon Industries, Inc., (SII) a supply company in South Carolina. SII serves as a warehouse for other companies that deliver and store their goods using SII’s facility as temporary storage. Jimmy was born in 1955 and spent 20 years in the military. Upon retiring, he was hired as a production supervisor for SII. Originally from SC, he is the night shift supervisor working 12 hour shifts from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am Monday through Thursday supervising 12 employees. Jimmy is a traditional Baby Boomer as he grew up in the 60’s, his dad worked, his mom stayed home, and he is the oldest of three children; a brother and a sister 2 and 4 years younger, respectively. Jimmy received his bachelor of arts degree while in the military in chemical engineering. Turnover is pretty high at SII as Jimmy is constantly training new employees. He had the option of moving to the day shift but he worked nights his whole military career and likes this shift so he asked to continue working this shift. His present staff consists of 1 employee over the age of 50 and the rest of the employees range from 20-40 years of age.

Employee #2

Michael Johnson was born in 1976 in Ohio. He has a technical background graduating in 1997 in computer science and moved to SC in 2010 with his new bride. Michael’s parents divorced when he was 2 years old and he rarely saw his biological father. His mom worked two jobs almost 7 days a week until she remarried when he was 10. His step dad travelled often with his job and had two daughters from a previous marriage. Their mom died 3 years before he married Michael’s mom. Michael applied for the Information Technology position but at the last minute the position was closed because the employee decided not to leave the company so Michel took on the responsibility of being the day shift supervisor. He works 7:00 am to 7:00 pm Monday through Thursday with Solomon Industries, Inc., (SII) a supply company in South Carolina. SII serves as a warehouse for other companies that deliver and store their goods using SII’s facility as temporary storage. Turnover is not as high as his night shift counterpart, but still has some turnover. The company allows tenured employees to move to the shift they desire if positions are available. Michael manages 15 employees, 8 are over the age of 50, 2 are new employees under 21 years old, and the remaining are between 21-50 years of age.

POST 1:

One of the major events that helped the Europeans to explore was an advancement in technology. Chief among these technological accomplishments were improvements in the compass, the astrolabe, and gun powder (Reich, pg. 2, 2011). The increase in gun powder helped the Europeans to fight off the attacks from the Indian ad avoid being slaughtered like in previous explorations. They also improve the construction of their ships which allowed them to sail faster and farther than ever before. These improvements, together with an improved rudder, made ships speedier, more maneuverable, and better able to take advantage of wind direction (Reich, pg. 3, 2011). The need to acquire lower prices goods from Asia was also another factor in Europe’s need to explore the world. The need to start a new life for many common people was also a factor in people agreeing to set sail on this new adventure.

Order Details/Description

Locate a minimum of 15 peer-reviewed articles that describe the problem or issue and that support the proposed solution. Eight of the 15 articles must be research-based (e.g., a study which is qualitative, quantitative, descriptive, or longitudinal).

Hint: Begin your search for literature by utilizing the databases with articles related to your PICO topic

Preview each of the 15 articles chosen by reading the article abstracts and summaries.

Hint: Article abstracts and summaries provide a concise description of the topic, research outcomes, and significance of findings.

Hint: Refer to “Topic 1: Checklist.”

Perform a rapid brief appraisal of each article by answering the following questions (one to two sentences are sufficient to answer each question):
1.How does each article describe the nature of the problem, issue, or deficit you have identified?
2.Does each article provide statistical information to demonstrate the gravity of the issue, problem, or deficit?
3.What are example(s) of morbidity, mortality, and rate of incidence or rate of occurrence in the general population?
4.Does each article support your proposed change?

Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines

Due Date: Jan 25, 2015 17:00 EST

Please remember to choose articles related to the PICO topic. I have include a attachment which identifies the PICO topic. These 15 articles will be used in future related assignments towards Nursing Capstone Project that I will order .

Developing a Question

Recall the components of PICOT from your research course:

(P) Population of Focus

(I) Intervention

(C) Comparison

(O) Outcome

(T) Time

Identify each of the components in relation to your topic.

In drug addicted patients how does non-pharmacological pain intervention compared with pain management with opioids affect relieving pain and preventing relapse?

“According to the recent Institute of Medicine Report on Pain, 100 million Americans suffer from pain” (American academy of pain medicine, 2013). Pain is the most sought out reason to see a physician and costs the united states more than half a trillion dollars a year, and it is still frequently treated incorrectly. In recent years healthcare professionals and lawmakers have been interested in developing better pain therapy to reduce drug diversion and addiction.

Then, develop a PICO question/statement.

P –In drug addicted patients

I –how does non-pharmacological pain intervention

C –compared with pain management with opioids

O –affect relieving pain and Preventing relapse?
