Accessing Early Literacy Skills

Accessing Early Literacy Skills

Read Chapter 3: Assessing Word Recognition and Reading Fluency (pp. 20-40). This chapter describes several early reading assessments such as Yopp-Singer Test of Phonemic Awareness, Basic Print Concepts, Three Minute Reading Assessments, Common Phonogram Assessment, etc. These tests measure various early literacy skills such as word recognition or sight words, concepts of print, fluency, etc.  The following are other sources which describe various early literacy assessments:

  • Concepts about print test.
  • Letter/sound identification.
  • Hearing and recording sounds assessment.
  • Basic phonics skills test.
  • The names test: A quick assessment of decoding ability.
  • Writing vocabulary.
  • Words their way spelling inventory.
  • San diego quick assessment of reading eligibility.
  • Taking running records.
  • An example of an informal reading inventory.

Pick any one of these assessments and conduct further research on it. You can do a Google search, interview an early reading teacher, etc. In your posting:

  • Describe the purpose of the assessment. What is it supposed to measure?
  • The procedures of the assessment. How would you administer it?
  • The rationale. Why is it important to measure this early reading skill?

The implications for your classroom . How would you use the assessment to inform your classroom practice?

One of the most important skills you will use throughout your career and personal life is analytical thinking. Analytical thinking requires you to identify the purpose or intent of a document, and determine whether the assertions or claims are valid and reasonable.

This assignment will help you to develop the skills necessary to determine the meaning found within a text. You will find an op/ed piece from an online newspaper, then write an essay in which you analyze the article. The intent of this essay is not to argue for or against the content; instead, you are analyzing what the article does in terms of purpose, approach, and effectiveness.

*Note that no one writes a polished essay in a single sitting. Start early and give yourself time for multiple revisions.

Step 1:

Go to an online newspaper website such as:

  • Chicago Tribune http://www.chicagotribune.com/
  • The Kansas City Star http://www.kansascity.com/
  • The New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/

Find an article in the Op/ED (Opinion/Editorial) section that is argumentative in nature.

Step 2:

Analyze the article using the following questions as a guide.

  1. What is the purpose of the text? In other words, what does the author want his or her readers to believe and/or do after reading the article?
  2. What strategies does the author use to achieve his/her purpose? Does the author use facts, examples, experiences, logic, assumptions, data, sources, expert opinion, and so on to prove his or her position? Be sure to give examples. You could also try to determine if the position is presented as more of a Classical argument or a Rogerian argument.
  3. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the approach the author used? Do you detect bias that is unreasonable? Does the author use unreasonable assertions, stereotypes, or faulty information to make his or her points? Does the author place the opposition in an unfair light? Does the author distort the arguments of those who disagree? Does the author fail to recognize the weaknesses in his or her own position? Does the author leave out important information? Does the author back up his or her assertions with evidence, or does he or she simply make assumptions? What would most improve the argument? Explain your answers.

Remember, you are not arguing for or against the content of the article you choose; you are analyzing how the author supports the claims that are made. Your analysis consists of identifying the author’s purpose, and determining whether the strategies used by the author are reasonable.  Be objective.

  1. To be clear: Your readers should not know what your position is about the subject.
  2. Do not include personal opinion or personal judgments about the subject matter.
  3. Do not include personal narrative.

Step 3:

Analysis Checklist – Use these questions to evaluate your essay against the assignment requirements

  1. Does the source article discuss a current controversial topic?
  2. Does you analysis identify the argument (point of view)?
  3. Does your analysis use effective transitions as it progresses from paragraph to paragraph?
  4. Does your analysis avoid personal opinion, casual language, or first or second person language (I or You)?
  5. Is the analysis complete? Does information need to be added or deleted to complete the assignment?
  6. Does this analysis meet the assignment criteria?

Use APA Format for this assignment: This analysis should be presented in the form of a single essay, complete with a title page, an introduction, three body paragraphs (purpose, approach, and effectiveness), a conclusion, and a full References page.

Your analysis should meet the following criteria:

  1. Is based on a current topic and/or event;
  2. Is between 300-500 words in length, not including the title page, abstract (if used), and References page;
  3. Includes direct quotations and paraphrased passages from the text;
  4. Uses attributive tags that not only work to convey the mood of the writer, but establish him or her as an authority in the field of study;
  5. Avoids personal opinion;
  6. Is written clearly, concisely, and accurately;
  7. Is written solely in third-person;
  8. Includes a References page;
  9. Has been closely edited so that it contains few or no mechanical errors;
  10. Is ordered with a title page, an introduction, three body paragraphs (purpose, approach, and effectiveness), a conclusion, and a full References page.

EDUCATION Mobile technology….. class assignment…….due today

Must be done in 8 hours…….DUE TODAY

Do the following:

For this assignment you get to watch some videos and answer some questions.

You are going to need to make time to go through the videos, as well as make time to figure out how you want to create a spreadsheet or document that documents the following questions as to each project.  I will attach a sample Excel worksheet that you can use, and a sample Word document template that you can use – or you can design your own. The videos of school projects using Mobile Technology in the K-12 classrooms are part of your major projects for this class.

These are great videos housed in what Orange County calls their “Student Technology Showcase.”  They are all short videos, with a pdf transcript and captioning, that show EXACTLY HOW the teachers in their district are utilizing mobile technology.  This should give you some ideas!

Remember, any movable device in the classroom is mobile technology!

http://www.ocde.us/EdTech/Pages/Student-Tech-Showcase/Student-Technology-Showcase-Videos-2012.aspx

** SOME OF THE VIDEOS MAY NOT PLAY ALL THE WAY THROUGH.  PLEASE USE THE TRANSCRIPT TO COMPLETE ANY VIDEOS THAT DON’T PLAY.**  It seems video no. 3, “I have iPad, I create” only works for a short time.  Fortunately there is a transcript for each video.

Your assignment is to A)  Watch all of these short videos B)  Create a document or spreadsheet where you detail for each video:          1) The name of the project, including the grade           2) The devices used          3)  The programs or apps used          4)  The main point of the lesson          5)  A brief description of the lesson          6)  Whether any kind of assessment was indicated or what you think the assessment might be.  (This includes if the answer is no, there is no assessment, you imagining a way to assess the students’ work and stating what that might be.)          7)  Any ideas the video gave you for teaching and learning (This question needs some kind of answer – not just “no”)          8)  Any observations you made about any of the topics we have covered in this course (Do you see DOK in action?  Differentiated learning?  21st Century Skills?  Etc.)  (This question requires some kind of answer – not just “no”)          9)  Using the SAMR model, where this lesson falls as to the four categories – and why!  (A most important question.  Please answer as fully as you can.)

Miss Prof Only first

The paper has to be 3 pages long, single space, using APA citation style. All citations must be provided.

You need to present the summary of your paper in the class. You will ave 5 minutes to present. So, prepare key bullet points that summarize your paper summary/ opinion. I suggest not preparing power points as we would not have enough time. So, just prepare bullet points in a MS-Word document and submit that along with your paper on BB as indicated in point 1 above.

The Topic will be about :” How Social Media Impacts Mental Health and Wellness of Students (People)?”

greet my three classmate

By:John

Hi everyone! Sorry for the late post as I had issues with some of my elective credits thus enrolling me in this course kind of late notice. My name is John, I’m originally from Philadelphia but currently living in Houston, TX. I have a son who is about to turn 10 years old. I pretty much already finished my BA in Journalism but had some elective credits not make it through. I chose this course because it seems interesting and an opposite from my major of Journalism and Mass Communication.I enjoy writing about history and politics. Eventually I plan on getting into politics after becoming a Journalist.I don’t have much of a science related background so what I learn here, may help me learn more about the human anatomy.Best of luck to everyone!

Hello Class,My name is Eugene Early I’m a 28 year old truck driver and Army veteran originally from Baltimore, MD but I now reside in Huntsville, AL. I’m engaged to a wonderful woman & we have 3 beautiful children, 1 girl & 2 boys. My original education plans were to get a degree in Logisitics & Supply Chain Management but I’ve recently had a change of heart and want to become an RN so I’m finishing my prerequisite courses with Ashford before  I enroll in a local college. In my personal life I am very passionate about my children and their development, though my boys are toddlers I use various age appropriate educational games & videos. I understand that more important than what we accomplish is the work our offspring are able to accomplish. In my professional life I’m passionate about creating and building successful business, I’m actually in the middle of purchasing my 1st commercial truck and reserving a new electric truck thats set to make it’s debut in the trucking world next year. This course will help me in the nursing field because I must understand the human body and how it functions in order to succeed. I’ve always enjoyed watching medical procedures but with this course I can gain some knowledge of what I’m actually looking at.

Hello everyone! My name is Charrissa Hensel.Here is a little bit of information about me.

 I live in a small town in Illinois with my husband and only son. I have been attending Ashford for many years now. I am in pursuit of my BA degree in healthcare administration while minoring in human resource management. Currently, I am a full-time employee, student, mom, and wife. It can be quite taxing sometimes but ultimately, I can’t wait for the future because I know I am making myself better today. Currently, I work for Cigna Healthcare and plan on utilizing my degree to move up the corporate ranks. I just accepted a position as a Client Service Coordinator and Implementation Associate, so I am grateful to be able to use my current education in my daily duties.One thing I am passionate about in my personal life is my family.In my professional life I am very passionate about being the best that I can within my current duties.I believe this course will provide me a foundation for future courses because….

I don’t believe this will provide me a foundation for future courses as this is my last class before graduation. However, I do believe that this course will assist with success in future endeavors within the healthcare career path.

geology discussion question 1000 words

Global climate change, although often thought of as a recent issue, is not restricted to recent geologic time. Evidence also exists for past climate change events. Discussion 5 focuses on the study of paleoclimatology (past climates), and how that can help us understand recent concerns about global climate change.

In order for your instructor to have a better understanding of your prior knowledge and learning experiences with global climate change, you are asked to complete a pre- and post-lesson survey. Your surveys contribute to your participation grade for discussion 5, but are NOT graded as correct or incorrect responses. Please answer as honestly as possible. Also provide a paragraph on how you evaluate the authority and reliability of the article that you submit for the assignment. See the guide below for more information.

Quality Assessment Guide – Evaluating the quality of what you find

Never just accept that the information you found is authoritative and reliable. Especially if it is found on the web. Before you use information you need to evaluate it to see if it is reliable information supplied by authoritative authors.

Not all books are reliable or authoritative.

  • Who is the author? What is his background? Does he have a bias?
  • Does that publisher only print books with a particular political bias? Yes even science and technology information can be biased.

Magazines and journals and newspapers contain content of varying authority.

  • Popular magazines may slant content for entertainment value.
  • Popular magazines may misrepresent science or technology because their writers do not fully understand it.
  • Popular magazines often have a bias suited to their normal readers.
  • Scholarly journals try to be authoritative, and nonbiased.
  • Peer reviewed journals print only articles approved by an author’s peers in the field.

In the scholarly world a journal can say “we will not publish your article because your peers don’t think it is any good” These are Peer Reviewed Journals. Every article is evaluated by other people working in the same field before being included in the publication.

Be particularly careful with web pages and documents. The web is not controlled by any entity. Anyone can put misinformation on the web, and no one can force them to take it down. This is definitely a buyer-beware world.

Guides for your assignment:

  1. Review the following tutorial to learn more about how to evaluate the information you find. Just place your curser over the evaluation criteria to see what it means.Evaluating sources
  2. Expanded evaluation criteria. Print out this document and refer to it as you do your evaluation.How to Identify Reliable Internet Sources
  3. Look at this document to find out how to tell if a periodical is a newspaper, popular magazine, trade publication, or a scholarly journal.Types of Periodicals
  4. Look at the following to learn how to immediately tell if a journal is scholarly or not.Popular vs. Scholarly Articles
  5. Here at WSU we subscribe to a tool that can help you decide if a periodical is a magazine, a scholarly journal, or a Refereed Journal (their name for peer reviewed journal). It is called Ulrich’s Periodicals.
  1. First, please complete the pre-lesson survey. Go to the “Surveys – Lesson 5” folder and select the “Pre-Lesson Survey”.
  2. Next, read the following:
  • Frequently Asked Questions about Global Warming from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). http://lwf.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/globalwarming.html#q8

From: A Paleo Perspective on Global Warming (NOAA)

  • What is Climate Change?
  • What is Global Warming?
  • How do we study Global Warming?
  • Discuss Weather, Climate and Paleoclimatoloty and what you can learn from past climates
  • Take a look at the data and discuss the:
  •
      • The Instrumental Record of Past Global Temperatures:
      • Paleoclimatic Data for the Last 2000 Years
      • Paleoclimatic Data Before 2000 Years Ago

Part of the intent of the discussion board assignment is for you to see what kind of data is out there on noaa’s website.  Look around and see what you can find. Heres some more detailed links to get you started:

Climate Change: https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/climate-information

Global Warming and Paleoclimate: https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/monitoring-references/faq/indicators.php

 and https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/data-access/paleoclimatology-data

 and  http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo/globalwarming/climate.html

Past Temperatures: https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cag/

 and https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/climate-information/climate-us

 and https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/data-access/paleoclimatology-data/perspectives

  1. Complete your original and response discussion posts. After reading the initial sources listed above, search for a recent (last year) news or journal article which discusses the study of paleoclimatology in the geologic record. Post a link to your article and discuss the following:
  • Give a paragraph summary of the article. Please include any reference to causes, impacts or evidence of past climate change.
  • Which geologic period(s) are being studied for the article?
  • What methods are used to measure past climate change?
  • How does this study of past climate relate or contribute to our understanding of recent climate change?
  1. Finally, once you are completely finished with lesson 5, please return and complete the post-lesson survey. Go to the “Surveys – Lesson 5” folder and select the “Post-Lesson Survey”.
