Due Week 4 and worth 160 points

You are the manager of a new primary care clinic located about twenty five (25) miles outside of a small city (population of 50,000). With five (5) family physicians, two (2) nurse practitioners, two (2) physicians’ assistants (PAs), and twenty (20) clinical support staff consisting of RNs, LPNs, and CMAs, the clinic provides primary care services to a diverse community of people living and working outside the city limits. Originally a rural area, the community has been growing and now includes promising opportunities in employment, education, and comfortable living spaces for young families. However, there are still many residents who struggle to make ends meet with older farms that have belonged to families for generations.

The central city includes two (2) large acute care facilities, and one (1) tertiary care facility that is known for its excellent pulmonary care. Both acute care hospitals provide the usual services such as labor and delivery, outpatient surgery, chronic diseases care, etc. and have fully equipped ancillary departments, such as lab and radiology. Up until this point, the residents have used the facilities’ emergency departments for routine illnesses and conditions when their private physicians were not readily available.

Analyze some of the key social, political, and economic factors that have led to the proliferation of urgent care facilities and primary care practices over the last 20-30 years.
Create a comprehensive mission statement for the clinic, and discuss how it will facilitate the provision of quality services.
Analyze and discuss one (1) or more directions the clinic might take to grow its business. Determine what factors you would consider when deciding what services to provide in-house and which ones to affiliate with other institutions.
Decide how you will determine if the clinic is meeting its goals. Identify three (3) performance measurements you could use to evaluate the success of the clinic’s services. “Strictly speaking, sensation is the immediate response of our senses to sensory stimulation; Perception is the brain’s interpretation of the signals it receives from its various sensory systems” says (Guy R. Lefrançois, 2016). Our brain receives signals from our different senses, such as taste or smell, and then interprets what it receives giving us a perception. There are different brain structures that enable these activities to happen. For example, the human brain is broken into three structures; the hindbrain, midbrain, and forebrain. The hindbrain is further broken down by the cerebellum, medulla, and pons. This section of the brain is responsible for balance, coordination, breathing, sleeping, movement, arousal, and respiration (Lefrancois, 2016). The midbrain is at the top of the brain stem. It connects the hindbrain to the forebrain and is primarily involved with maintaining arousal, or alertness and motivation (Lefrancios, 2016). The forebrain is the largest structure of the human brain. It completely surrounds the midbrain and is responsible for human thought, behavior, and emotion (Lefrancois, 2016). These structures of the human brain are broken down further into many other substructures. There are some important cues the brain uses to make sense of the world around us including; binocular cues, and monocular cues. Binocular cues means that our eyes are both place in front and as a result we have a much better perception of depth and distance. This is because both eyes are focused on an object at the same time. If the object is moved closer our eyes converge or point slightly inward (Lefrancois, 2016). Monocular cues do not depend on having two eyes. These cues are things such as larger objects are judged to be closer, objects behind another are further away, converging lines suggest distance, and shady objects are seen as being distant (Lefrancois, 2016). Because of these different cues it is sometimes easy to trick the brain into perceiving things differently than they actually are. For example, if the brain perceives shaded objects as being farther away one can shade an object that is actually closer and make it appear far off. The same can be said for the size of an object. If object close up seem larger then they will seem smaller if they are moved farther. However, one can place a small object very close but yet it will give an illusion as being far off. Different societies will dictate how individuals perceive the world around them. “East Asians have been found to classify objects and events on the basis of relationships and family resemblance, whereas Americans classify on the basis of rule-based category membership” says (Richard E. The $6 Billion Software Bug
In August 2003, the largest power blackout in North American history hit the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. More than 50 million people lost power, some for up to two days. At least 11 people died as a result of the blackout. Total cost: $6 billion. Investigators concluded that the initial problem started when a power line in Ohio sagged and hit an overgrown tree. Normally, this is an isolated incident. When such an incident occurs, alarm systems alert power systems operators of the problem so they can take appropriate steps to make sure that the problem remains isolated. Unfortunately, in this case, a software bug caused the alarm system to malfunction. This started a cascade of errors that led to more than 50 million people losing electrical power. The lack of power also led to water supply problems and the shutdown of major transportation systems, including railroads and airlines. Gas stations could not dispense fuel. Cell phone service was interrupted (although wired phones continued working).
While lack of proper maintenance was the root cause of the blackout, without the software bug, the impact would have been small and limited to relatively few people. With the software error, tens of millions of people were affected, and there were billions in economic costs.
There are many other examples of the serious consequences of faulty software:
In 2013, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) went live, and as millions of Americans accessed the newly created exchange websites, the websites crashed and became nonresponsive. As a result, millions of dollars had to be spent to get the websites working properly.
In 2005, Toyota recalled more than 150,000 Prius hybrids to fix software that caused the gasoline engine to shut down unexpectedly.
In 2004, a software error disrupted communication at Los Angeles International Airport’s air traffic control system; 800 flights were disrupted. Fortunately, there were no midair collisions, although there were several near misses.
From 1985 to 1987, software errors in the Therac-25 radiation therapy device allowed the device to deliver lethal doses of radiation to patients. At least five patients died.
In 1990, an error in the control systems of AT&T’s long distance switches left 60,000 people without long-distance service.
