Rite of Passage and Developmental Theories

A rite of passage acknowledges a significant change in someone’s life. It represents the transition from one point in development, such as childhood, to another, such as adulthood. The rite of passage is often celebrated by some type of ceremony that requires the individual to demonstrate the ability to successfully advance to the next stage in life.

Many rites of passage take place during the time that Westerners label “adolescence.” Some cultures move quickly from childhood to adulthood and do not identify a period in between such as the teen years.

A number of psychological theorists have attempted to understand development in adolescence and throughout the life span. Erik Erikson suggested that there are eight stages and that each is identified by a conflict. If the conflict is resolved, the individual progresses successfully to the next stage. For example, adolescence is characterized by ego identity vs. role confusion. At this stage of life, teenagers grapple with who they are. Jean Piaget focused on children’s thought processes, and his work did not address the entire life span. Piaget’s final stage is the development of abstract thought in adolescence. This stage is called “formal operations.” Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory focuses on moral development and proposes six stages. Moral choices are closely tied to cultural norms. There is some controversy regarding whether or not these theories are appropriate for all cultures.

The course textbook An Introduction to Community Health refers to teens and their risky behaviors. The number of single parent households with children under the age of eighteen continues to rise. Unemployment is higher for teens and young adults, especially for minority populations. Health behavior and lifestyle choices are tested during this timeframe, with tobacco use, underage drinking, abuse of prescription illegal drugs, and risky sexual behavior. Teen violence and suicide are also a cause of concern to families and the community.

Based on your understanding of the topic, create a report in a Microsoft Word document answering the following questions:

How do social and environmental factors affect teens and young adults making healthy or unhealthy decisions? How influential is the family environment?
What motivates teens to form groups and how do negative behaviors increase when teens are involved in small or large gangs?
What specific issues does the U.S. minority population face in terms of health issues, lack of healthcare, and risky behaviors?
What specific type of community program would you develop if you were in charge of improving options for teens and young adults? What community members would you seek to speak with about your program proposal and how important is it to include influential community members who can help support legislation, space, or financial services to help a community program succeed?
How will education reduce risk taking behaviors? What type of follow up and evaluation will you do to ensure a successful program?

Psychological Treatment in Correctional Settings
Discusses the findings of Boothby & Clements (2000) survey of psychologists working in state and federal correctional facilities across the U.S. Increasingly, the prison populations reflect a high number of inmates suffering from identified mental illnesses.
This presents issues for corrections personnel who are responsible for the safety of prisoners as well as the safety of staff. The goals of the correctional psychological service providers may not be consistent with the overall goals of the institution. The mental health status of offenders impacts staffing considerations, both in number and in skills, of incarceration facilities. Large populations of inmates with mental health issues can impact the stress levels of staff, which can influence their job performance as well as their interpersonal relationships.
Address the following points in your paper:
Discuss the impacts of the psychological make–up of offenders has on the functional responsibilities of incarceration facilities.
Discuss how the biases and assumptions of correctional service providers influence their assessment of and interaction with these offenders.
Explain your findings within the continuing context of the endogenous and exogenous theories of criminal behavior and the analysis of how our biases and assumptions influence our assessments of individuals.

While nursing care has traditionally been centered on individuals the emerging focus of population health allows nurses to take a broader view for improving health outcomes.

This wider perspective means that nurses may now examine a range of factors that influence populations as a whole rather than focus solely on individual patients.
This week you will evaluate factors that impact population health and thus the health care system. These factors include access to health care individual behavior the social and physical environment and genetics. You will also consider the role of epidemiologic data in the process of evaluating the health of a population.

To effectively develop policies and programs to improve population health it is useful to use a framework to guide the process. Different organizations and governmental agencies (for example Healthy People 2020) have created a variety of such frameworks which establish measures for assessing population health. These measures frequently are derived from the examination of epidemiologic data which include key measures of population health such as mortality morbidity life expectancy etc. Within each measure are a variety of progress indicators that use epidemiologic data to assess improvement or change.
For this Discussion you will apply a framework developed by Kindig Asada and Booske (2008) to a population health issue of interest to you. This framework includes five key health determinants that should be considered when developing policies and programs to improve population health: access to health care individual behavior social environment physical environment and genetics.

With this information in mind elect a population health issue that is of interest to you.
Using this weeks Learning Resources the Library and other relevant resources conduct a search to locate current data on your population health issue.
Consider how epidemiologic data has been used to design population health measures and policy initiatives in addressing this issue.
Post a summary of how the five population health determinants (access to health care individual behavior social environment physical environment and genetics) affect your selected health issue and which determinants you think are most impactful for that particular issue and why. Explain how epidemiologic data supports the significance of your issue and explain how this data has been used in designing population health measures and policy initiatives.
