Describe the mental state of the sniper since the three shootings have occurred in which he killed the offenders.
Scenario

You are a counselor for a major metropolitan police force. Your job is to interview persons who are referred to you by superiors, who voluntarily come to you for counseling, or who, because of a specific incident, are mandated by departmental regulations to seek your counsel. On the last four callouts over the past 6 weeks, three of them have resulted in the offender being shot to death by your unit’s sniper. You are scheduled to speak with him this week about his feelings concerning the shootings. You received a call from his wife the night before last. It seems that the sniper has taken to sleeping in the living room and not in his bedroom. His wife has been unable to convince him to sleep in bed with her for the past month. He claims that he has headaches and goes to sleep on the couch. After the last mission in which he had to shoot a suspect, the team went to a local bar that they patronize. The sniper reportedly got drunk and, while hugging another member of the team, he started crying about the three men that he had to shoot over the past six weeks. The next day, he acted like the crying incident did not happen. He either forgot it in the alcohol haze, or pretended not to remember it.
In a callout last night, the sniper and his partner took up a position at the rear of a house where home invaders were barricaded. At one point, an offender exited the back door with a gun in his hand. The sniper stood up in the open and walked right up to the offender, who was dazed at the sniper’s behavior. The sniper struck the weapon from the offender’s hand with the butt of his rifle, and then knocked him to the ground, where he placed him in handcuffs. Although it initially seemed to be a brave act, it violated all protocol to break cover, and it risked the sniper, his partner, and the offender’s life.
You have a decision to make at this point. In a 3–5 page paper, respond to the following:
Describe the mental state of the sniper since the three shootings have occurred in which he killed the offenders.
Articulate two of the possible mental disorders that the sniper has that are interfering with his work.
Explain whether, if the sniper would get the treatment needed, he might be able to return to his duties as a sniper, or possibly back to regular uniformed duties.

Explain two ways your own culture influences your definitions of mental health. Discussion 1: Defining Mental Health

Explain two ways your own culture influences your definitions of mental health.
Discussion 1: Defining Mental Health

Many Western groups advocate viewing mental health issues from a medical model. Providers of mental health services and advocates for the mentally ill use this medical model with the intention of reducing the stigma placed on the individual diagnosed with the mental illness. Yet, consider the startling finding that, “those who adopted the biomedical and genetic beliefs about mental illness were most often those who wanted less contact with the mentally ill or thought of them as dangerous and unpredictable” (Watters, 2010, p. 173). Western conceptualization of mental health and illness has spread across the globe and impacted how individuals are treated. For example, cultures may have initially been more tolerant of these behaviors due to factors such as externalized locus of control, beliefs in traditional healing, spiritual beliefs, and less expressed emotion. (Watters, 2010)
For this Discussion, review this week’s Learning Resources. Select a culture and consider how this culture perceives mental illness.
With these thoughts in mind:
your definitions of good mental health and poor mental health. Explain two ways your own culture influences your definitions of mental health. Then explain how your definition of mental health might differ from that of your selected culture. Finally, describe a behavior that is considered normal in your culture but would be considered abnormal in the culture you selected. Support your responses using the Learning Resources and the current literature.

Discussion 2: Social Change
In this course, you may have found it interesting to discover how extensively culture impacts psychology. Culture influences human development, identity and personality, attitudes and beliefs, and healthcare. As a scholar-practitioner, you may want to create a positive social change. In doing so, reflect on your future role as a scholar-practitioner. Consider the possible future research related to culture and psychology you might be interested in conducting. Think about how you may affect social change.

For this Discussion, reflect on how learning about the impact of culture on human psychology can help you develop as a scholar-practitioner, dedicated to positive social change.
With these thoughts in mind:
a brief description of two topics related to culture that you might be interested in researching further. Then, as a future scholar-practitioner, explain two ways you might impact social change in relation to culture and psychology. Be specific and use examples to illustrate your points.

Discuss the influence of culture in ethical decision making.Discussion board 1 with two parts so please follow the instructions carefully!

Discuss the influence of culture in ethical decision making.Discussion board 1 with two parts so please follow the instructions carefully!

Part 1
A human services worker needs to be competent to work with clients from different cultures. There are times when cultural differences between the human services worker and the client influence the final service. For example, suppose a human services worker promotes the cause of independence for all people while the client’s culture values strong family cohesion. In this case, the client’s values are equivalent to dependency in the eyes of the human services worker and can lead to conflict. However, if the human services worker possesses the cultural competence necessary to work with the client, he or she would be better equipped to manage this discrepancy in personally held, culture-based views. When situations such as these arise, the human services worker should be aware of the needs of the client with strong consideration of cultural influence.
When potential ethical conflicts occur due to various differences, the human services worker faces the challenge of making the appropriate ethical decision to ensure that the rights of his or her client are protected while receiving services. The assignment will explore the role of such cultural influences in ethical decisions in human services.
Tasks:
On the basis of your readings and research, address the following in about 200 words:
Discuss the influence of culture in ethical decision making. In your answer:
Address the influence of culture on the individual perceptions of the human services worker and the client.
Focus on the potential ethical dilemmas that might arise from differences in cultural perspectives.
Part 2
Human services administrators manage agencies that employ professionals from various disciplines.
In this assignment, you will try to resolve an issue from the perspective of an administrator who is helping a psychologist in an agency. It is important to note that ethics codes might require psychologists to handle situations differently than social workers and counselors and vice versa.
Tasks:
You are the human services administrator for an agency and Shana is a human services professional in your agency. She is working with a client who was initially diagnosed with mild depression after separating from her fiancé. As Shana’s work proceeds, she realizes that her client is beginning to recover memories from a past trauma. While Shana is competent with treating depression and has worked in cases with trauma-related symptoms in the past, she has no experience treating the type of trauma identified by her client.
You are the administrator of the agency responsible for helping Shana handle this situation. Based on your knowledge and research, respond to the following questions in about 300 words:
What would Shana do in this situation if she were a licensed professional counselor in a rural area where she was the only helping professional?
What would Shana’s response as a licensed counselor be? Would it be similar to or different from the way she would handle the same situation if she were a social worker or a psychologist in the agency?
In your responses, consider the following:
There are no other psychologists, counselors, social workers, or psychiatrists within a hundred-mile radius.
Shana’s client has limited means of transportation.
Shana has no formal training in treating the type of trauma her client is experiencing.
Shana is a member of a professional organization, such as American Psychological Association (APA), National Association of Social Workers (NASW), or American Counseling Association (ACA).
Discussion board 2 and please include references for both discussion boards.
There are times when human services providers are obligated to release confidential information about clients in spite of having concerns about how the information will be used. However, they are also responsible for protecting the clients’ privacy at such times.
The case that you will analyze in this assignment illustrates the conflict faced by human services professionals when responding to requests for their clients’ confidential information.
The Case:
Assume that you are working with a client who was referred to you by his probation officer. You receive a request by the probation officer for all of your client’s records since the beginning of his treatment. You have consent from your client to release the records.
However, the records contain information that you think would cause the probation officer to misappropriate her authority with your client because the officer has informally shared with you her disdain for people who have engaged in the type of activity that your client admitted to in one of your sessions.
While you have the obligation to release your client’s records, your values about the potential abuse of authority by the probation officer cause significant internal conflict about releasing the records.
Tasks:
Consider the case and respond to the following in about 300 words:
Discuss how you would negotiate the conflict between your values and your ethical obligation to release your client’s records.
In your answer, you should address the following:
The extent of information being requested
The client’s understanding of the purpose of releasing the confidential information
Your duty to protect your client’s right to privacy
The potential result if you refuse to release the records
Discussion board 3 and please include references and use 300 words
There was a time when psychologists were the primary human services professionals allowed to administer objective tests and diagnose mental and emotional disorders. However, as social workers and counselors began providing mental health services at a growing rate due to the need for more mental health service providers, many states began to authorize these professionals to provide these services if they could demonstrate competence, which could be gained from education, training, and experience.
There are advantages of allowing social workers and counselors to perform the same duties that were once exclusively performed by psychologists. For example, the services cost less when provided by a social worker or a counselor compared to the charges of a psychologist. In addition, the discipline-specific perspectives offered by social workers and counselors on mental health needs of clients have resulted in attention to the influence of factors beyond the focus of psychologists, such as housing, family problems, and other environmental factors affecting mental health. The current mental health community now considers social workers and counselors as qualified as psychologists to provide a full range of mental health services. Each state has specific rules for the scope of practice for each different type of mental health professional.
In this assignment, you will explore the differences in the scopes of practice among different human services professionals. Human services administrators have to be familiar with the laws and rules governing the practice of the different types of direct service professionals employed by their agency.
Tasks:
Review psychologist, counselor, and social worker licensure laws and rules in your state. After reviewing the laws and rules, address the following:
What are the differences in education and training requirements for competence in psychological testing among psychologists, counselors, and social workers?
What level of licensure is required for social workers to diagnose mental health disorders?
Provide your opinion about the major differences you found in your research on the competency requirements for psychologists, counselors, and social workers to engage in psychological testing and diagnosing clients.

Describe the strengths and limitations of the model as it applies to the illness or health condition you selected.

Describe the strengths and limitations of the model as it applies to the illness or health condition you selected.

Public health workers are often like marketers trying to sell a product. They would like to know how to “sell” consumers on a health behavior; for example, they may want to persuade consumers to get enough calcium to prevent osteoporosis. It would be important to know whether consumers care about osteoporosis or if they even know what it is.

The Precaution Adoption Process Model (PAPM) is a convenient framework for assessing where a person is in the process of deciding to take action on a health behavior. Not all health behaviors, however, fit the seven stages of this model. Some conditions involve complex behaviors such as protecting against skin cancer by wearing sunscreen, limiting time in the sun, and being screened by a dermatologist. A person may be in Stage 6 because they wear sunscreen but in Stage 1 because they have moles that need to be screened by a healthcare provider. In this example, the PAPM may not be a good fit.

For this Discussion, select a health condition to research. Review the literature, and select a peer-reviewed article about the illness or health condition. Consider how you would apply the seven stages of the PAPM to this health issue. (See Figures 6.1 and 6.2 on page 127 of the text for example diagrams.)

With these thoughts in mind:

Post 3-4 pages of a brief description of the article you selected. Then, construct a diagram in a Word file that depicts the stages of the Precaution Adoption Process Model as it applies to your selected illness or health condition. Describe the strengths and limitations of the model as it applies to the illness or health condition you selected.

Recognize the hindrances to the decision-making process in order to apply problem-solving skills to a variety of situations. Due Week 9 and worth 150 points

Recognize the hindrances to the decision-making process in order to apply problem-solving skills to a variety of situations.
Due Week 9 and worth 150 points

When faced with a problem, what do you do to solve it? This assignment asks you to apply a six-step to problem solving process to a specific problem scenario. You will write a paper that presents a synthesis of your ideas about solving the problem using this systematic approach. As Voltaire said, “No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking.”

Choose one (1) of the problem scenarios as a topic choice for your paper (Note: Your professor must approve your topic choice before you begin work on the assignment.)

Scenario 1: You have worked at your company for eleven (11) years. You have returned to college to earn a Bachelor’s degree in order to increase your chances for a promotion. You are nearly finished with your degree, when a supervisor’s position in a competing company becomes available in another state. The start date is in two (2) weeks, during your final exam period for your courses. The position offers a $15,000 per year salary increase, a car allowance, and relocation expenses. Your former supervisor works for the company and is recommending you for the position based on your outstanding job performance; if you want the job, it’s yours. All of the other supervisors at this level in the company have Master’s degrees, so you know that you would be expected to earn your Bachelor’s degree and continue on to a Master’s degree. Your present company offers tuition reimbursement, but the new company does not.

Scenario 2: Your child comes home from school with an assignment sheet for a school project. He / she is very excited about the project and begins work immediately, doing research on the Internet and gathering materials. You read over the assignment sheet and notice that your child is not including all of the required items in the project, and you have some ideas for how to improve the quality of the presentation. You recently read an article in a parenting magazine about the importance of a child developing responsibility for his/ her own learning. You recall the many ways in which your parents took over your school projects. You, on the other hand, want to encourage your child’s confidence in his / her ability to complete a project independently. The next day, you are at the grocery store when you see a parent of a student in your child’s class. That parent has spent over $30 in supplies for the science project and is taking a day off of work to put the pieces of the project together.

Scenario 3: You have two jobs—one during the week from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and one on Saturday from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm. You are taking two classes—one that meets from 6:00 to 10:00 pm, and one class online. You have two kids—one who plays soccer, and one who is in band. You have two elderly parents who no longer drive. You have two siblings—one who lives two (2) miles away, and one who lives in another state. You have two (2) papers due in your classes the same week that one (1) of your children has a soccer tournament, and the other child has a band concert. You are coaching the soccer team, and you are in charge of fundraising for the band. You have a goal to complete your degree in two (2) years. Your doctor tells you that your blood pressure, your cholesterol, and your weight are too high and recommends several medications that cost you nearly $200 per month after your insurance co-pay.

What differentiates the role of the community and public health nurse from other health professionals?

The Role of the Community and Public Health Nurse This week, your Instructor assigned you a chapter in the course textbook that discussed the role of the public health nurse in a specific setting. Based on your assigned chapter and bearing in mind the primary prevention focus of the community/public health nurse, respond to the following: What differentiates the role of the community and public health nurse from other health professionals? What skills and knowledge are necessary for the type of decision making inherent in population-focused nursing practice? How do these skills differ from those required in the institutional setting? Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature. Post your response to this Discussion byDay 3. Respond to at leasttwocolleagues’ postings byDay 7. See the Week 1 Discussion area for details. Application The History of Public Health and the Role of the Community/Public Health Nurse Using Chapter 2 in the course textbook, your assigned reading on the role of the nurse in a specific public health setting, and reviewing this week’s media presentation, address the following in a 2- to 3-page paper: Trace the history of the public health nurse including the contributions made by Lillian Wald and the Henry Street Settlement. Also, summarize the role of the nurse in the practice setting assigned. Include the following in your summary: Explain how the core functions of community/public health nursing and the standards of practice are met with that specific role. Describe the population served by the nurse in this role. Which interventions might the nurse in this role utilize? Explain the level of practice used in this practice setting (primary/secondary/tertiary). Describe an ethical dilemma that might be encountered in this nursing role. Use the Application Rubric in the Course Info area on the left navigation bar to develop this paper. Due byDay 7. Virtual Practicum Team Discussion Practicum Activities: Identify a Population Group Community health nursing needs to be not only on the individual, but also the family and the community. This activity is intended to teach you how the term community health is about identifying problems and managing interactions within the community. In meeting multiple needs, community health nurses are required to fulfill multiple roles. These roles include care provider, educator, advocate, manager, collaborator, leader and researcher. This week, your instructor has assigned you to choose a population group that you will write about for the next six weeks. Community health nursing settings include homes, ambulatory care settings, schools, occupational heath settings, residential institutions, and the community at large. Knowing about these settings may assist you in choosing your population group. Read more about populations in your textbook. Please address the following: Introduce yourself to your team members. Where do you work? Briefly describe the community where you live. For the purpose of the Population-Based Nursing Care Project, choose a population group that interests you. Describe what the members of your chosen group have in common? For example, do they share some important features in their lives? What are some health problems or issues that you can think of that may affect the population that you are interested in?. Post your response to this Discussion byDay 5. Respond to at leasttwocolleagues’ postings byDay 7. See the Week 6 Practicum Discussion area for details.
