The Relationship between Job Characteristics and Organizational Commitment, and Turnover Intention in Emergency Department Nurses

Scholarly and Professional Communication in Nursing
Assignment Instructions and Requirements
For your course project, you will be selecting a current practice issue related to healthcare that you have
identified. The project involves a systematic assessment of this issue that may lead to a real-life evidence-based
practice change. These projects may integrate best practices, principles of effective leadership and negotiation
skills, use of information systems to evaluate patient outcomes, and theories of organizational behavior.
Examples of student projects include evaluating and/or modifying current practice standards, increasing clinical
application of evidence-based interventions and adapting or designing an evidence-based intervention.
This course project will be completed in 4 parts, each building upon one another:
I. Topic Selection / PICOT / Clinical Question / Literature Review
II. References
III. APN Quality Improvement course paper
IV. Poster presentation
All hard copy submissions are to be presented and submitted in a professional and scholarly quality – stapled
once at the top left corner, free from marks and creases and in a normal black print quality. Review your work
several times to be certain you are submitting thoughtful, scholarly and professional communication in your
writing. Spelling and grammar check is useful, however, you should always print out your work to proof, as many
common errors are not identified when reading from the computer screen. Remember, you are the last editor of
your work and should not rely just on spelling and grammar check.
Part I: Topic/PICOT/Clinical Question/Literature Review
• Do not rush your topic decision. Give this topic and issue identification scholarly and professional
thought, as you will be working with it for the semester. In addition, this topic may prove to be a
significant part of your nursing career by submitting for publication or presenting at a nursing conference
such as NLN, ANA, Sigma Theta Tau, or other professional nursing organizations.
• Read the following article located in Blackboard to assist in completing Part I.
Stillwell, S. B. (2010). Asking the clinical question: A key step in evidence-based practice. American Journal of
Nursing, 110(3), 58-61.
• Title page: As per template (using your chosen title for this paper)
• Use the template provided in Black Board (Part I) – DO NOT change formatting in any way.
• Current Practice Issue: (1) complete sentence identifying the identified current practice issue
• PICOT: in PICOT format as per template
• Clinical Question: Above PICOT in (1) sentence, question format.
• How did you determine as a need in your practice or at your organization? (2) complete paragraphs.
• How will this project benefit patients, your practice or your organization? (2) complete paragraphs.
• Review of Literature: Begin on following page.
o A minimum of 10 references from peer-reviewed sources within 5 years of publication.
o Databases: Must use a variety of at least 2 databases

To achieve a successful project experience and outcome, you are expected to meet the following requirements –
APA must be followed in the paper’s entirety:
• Title page: As per template (using your chosen title for this paper)
• Abstract: Including keywords. Follow APA guidelines and template
• Introduction: This is not a title. The first 2-3 paragraphs is the introduction to the reader.
• The body of the paper must include the following Level I Headings:
• Identified Current Practice Issue (As per previous assignments)
• PICOT and Clinical Question (As per previous assignments)
• Rationale for Change (Why is this needed? What is your rational for suggesting this change?)
• Literature Review (Summary of your literature review)
• Intervention (How will you implement your plan? Articulate steps in sentence format not bulleted)
• Expected Impact (What is the benefit? What is the impact if this is implemented? What’s your goal?)
• Conclusion (Wrap it up!)
• Next Steps (What do you think needs to be done from here? What future steps are to be taken?)
• References: As per APA guidelines and format. A minimum of 10 references from peer-reviewed sources
within 5 years of publication unless it is a landmark or sentinel work.
• Writing style: Written communication free of spelling or grammatical errors that detract from the overall
message. Writing is clear, precise, and scholarly. Concepts flow in a logical order.
• A minimum of 4 complete and a maximum of 5 pages NOT including title page, abstract and references.
• See Grading Rubric “Part III Course Paper” for grading criteria. It is important that you become familiar with
the rubric, as this is how you will be graded. Please use this as you prepare your assignment.
Part V: Poster Presentation
Using your course paper topic, you will create a poster to be orally presented to the class.
• Your poster should be directed at a specific audience – the NP and healthcare professionals

syllabus apply.
• You must use the provided PowerPoint template provided in Black Board for your poster.
o Do NOT change the formatting in any way on the Template.
• Upload a recent, professional picture of yourself on the right top where it says “Logo”
o Do not use “car selfies”, “girls/guys night out”, “duck faces” “wedding photos” or a (FB) social
media pictures. It should be professional and an up close headshot. Remember this is a
professional and scholarly representation of you.
• Must include a figure and table in appropriate APA format
• Must include a picture applicable and easy recognizable to your topic that is visually appealing
• You will have a maximum of 5 minutes to present your poster to the class. While rehearsing, time
yourself so that you meet the minimum and maximum time requirements.
• You must know your topic WELL as the projection is small and you will not be able to read from it. It is
advisable as well to NOT read from it as it detracts from the interest in your topic and presents you as
appearing unprepared. (You all know how it feels to be read to from a power point, right?)
• See Grading Rubric “Part IV Poster Presentation” for grading criteria

Considering the reason behind the termination of the employees, formulate a human resources policy that addresses inappropriate conduct in the workplace, the process of reporting inappropriate conduct, and the consequences of violating the policy. Explain your rationale.

Blumberg’s Nursing Home (BNH) is a 100-bed Medicare and Medicaid certified facility in suburban Philadelphia, PA. The administrator recently terminated the facility’s Director of Nursing (DON), receptionist, and dietary aid for inappropriate conduct. They had all been involved in purchasing and using illegal substances on facility grounds. Facility staff, as well as many of the more lucid residents, have found out about the incident.
The charge nurse has been appointed interim DON. The human resource manager has sent a memo to all staff informing them of a mandatory staff meeting to discuss BNH’s code of ethics and to provide additional training on workplace culture. Because federal law requires that there be at least one (1) registered nurse on duty for a minimum of eight (8) hours a day, seven (7) days a week, and that the DON must be a registered nurse (RN) – which the interim DON is not – BNH is out of compliance.
Write a four to six (4-6) page paper in which you: 1. Assess the immediate staffing needs at BNH. Prioritize the order in which BNH should fill the main unstaffed position(s). Justify your selection(s). 2. Considering the reason behind the termination of the employees, formulate a human resources policy that addresses inappropriate conduct in the workplace, the process of reporting inappropriate conduct, and the consequences of violating the policy. Explain your rationale. 3. Per the text, an effective long-term care facility administrator must have both leadership and management skills. Propose at least one (1) way the administrator in this case must demonstrate quality leadership skills, and one (1) way the administrator must demonstrate quality management skills in the aftermath of this crisis so as to improve and maintain staff and resident morale. 4. Recommend a strategy for BNH to use the Quality Indicator Survey to improve administrative practices and ensure future compliance at the facility. Justify your recommendation. 5. Use at least three (3) quality academic resources. Note: Wikipedia and other similar websites do not qualify as academic resources.

What value does the manager you interviewed place on career self-assessments?Organizations today have adopted innovative measures to retain key talent and reduce turnover.

What value does the manager you interviewed place on career self-assessments?Organizations today have adopted innovative measures to retain key talent and reduce turnover.

These measures include dual-career paths and alternative or flexible work arrangements. In addition, some organizations also provide their employees with outplacement, recruitment, and coaching services.

Managers should know and understand how to develop an employee in his/her preferred career path. In order for the assessment data to be beneficial to the employee, the manager should understand and know how to interpret the data. For this assignment, you will conduct an interview with someone who is in or has been in a management position and write a 4-5 page paper covering the following items:

What value does the manager you interviewed place on career self-assessments?
What role does the interviewee play in helping his or her employee reach their career objectives? Does the manager see any room for improvement in this area? Why or why not?
Based on your interview, outline proactive approaches employees can employ to gain assistance from his/her manager to advance within the organization and discuss how the information gathered from a career assessment can be used to promote internal career development
In addition, address the steps the employee can take to ensure assistance is received on a continual basis from the manager to promote workplace self-development.

What are some security measures that can be put into use in a clinical setting? Answer question at the end of each each paragraph.

What are some security measures that can be put into use in a clinical setting?
Answer question at the end of each each paragraph.

1)Quality information is essential to the delivery of appropriate client care. Data can be managed using a database application. A data warehouse is a collection of several databases that can be manipulated to provide complex data analysis. Information quality is ensured when measures to protect it are an integral part of its collection, use, storage, retrieval, and exchange. Data storage measures should provide safe, accessible storage to authorized persons through a plan that considers provider, client, and third-party payer needs; physical threats to information and media (Hebda & Czar, 2013). What are some security measures that can be put into use in a clinical setting?

2.)As you read about in the text (Hebda & Czar, 2013), computer networks are linked systems of computers. Local area networks, WANs, and the Internet are all types of computer networks. Networks may use various technologies including cabling, radio signals, client-server, and thin client. In choosing a computer system, one must consider current and future information processing needs, budget, and human factors. A hot trend in the medical field, mobile and handheld computer technology provide the promise of efficiency, improvements in the safety of care delivery, cost savings, and work redesign. Describe some mobile technology that you have seen in a clinical setting and/or in school and how does that technology aid clinical process?

3.)Informatics is the application of computer and statistical techniques for management information. So, nursing informatics is the use of information and computer technology as a tool to process information to support all areas of nursing (practice, education, administration, research). A formal definition of nursing informatics shapes job descriptions and educational preparation for informatics practice.

We will see in this course that nursing informatics is a necessity in today’s rapidly changing healthcare delivery system. We know that computer technology facilitates the collection of data for analysis, which can be used to justify the efficacy of particular interventions and improve the quality of care. How do you feel nursing informatics will aid you as a nurse in the field?

4) According to Hebda & Czar (2013), data is a collection of numbers, characters, or facts that are gathered according to some perceived need or analysis and possibly for action at a later point in time. Since data can have little meaning alone, a collection of data can be examined for patterns and structure that can be interpreted. And it is at this point that data become information. Subsequently, knowledge is the synthesis of information derived from several sources to produce a single concept or idea.

Since in healthcare delivery systems are knowledge-intensive settings with nurses as the largest group of knowledge workers within those systems, what kind of information technology tools offer support to nurses and other healthcare workers in their knowledge work?

Review the information on the evidence hierarchy discussed in Chapter 2 of the course text, in the article, “Facilitating Access to Pre-Processed Research Evidence in Public Health,” and in the multimedia presentation “Hierarchy of Evidence Pyramid,” found in this week’s Learning Resources.

An important step in the EBP process is reviewing the current body of literature to better understand the subject or topic in which you are interested. By conducting a review of the literature, you are building foundational knowledge about the topic; later, you can use this background to build new insights. Developing a strong grasp of a topic can only be garnered by taking the time to thoroughly search for relevant information and resources.
For this Discussion, you will practice searching the literature to find evidence on a specific topic.
To prepare:
Choose a simple search term(s) relating to a topic of your PICOT question.
Review the information on the Walden Library’s website, “Levels of evidence.” Take a few minutes to explore the different types of databases available for each level of evidence and focus on the meaning of filtered and non-filtered resources.
Conduct a literature search in the Walden Library on your selected topic using the databases that you reviewed. Use at least one database for each of the three levels of filtered information and at least one unfiltered database. Record the number of hits that you find at each level of the hierarchy of evidence.
Select one article from the results at each level of the hierarchy. Compare the articles based on the quality and depth of information. What would be the value of each resource if you were determining an evidence-based practice?
QUESTIONS
Post a summary of your search. Describe what topic you selected, the search term(s) that you used, and the number of results found at each level of the hierarchy. Compare the types of information found in the articles from different levels and the value of the information from each level. Highlight a useful tip that you could share with your colleagues about conducting an effective literature search.
