HTTP, TCP/IP, etc. are examples of such protocols, but they deal in more generic communication channels. While sending domain-specific data requires definition of more specific standards. HL7(Health Level Seven) is one of the EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) standards mainly used to exchange the data between healthcare service providers (Billing Companies, Hospitals, clinics, nursing homes etc.) and laboratories/ pharmacies to send and receive patient’s medical record (PMR).

Research Assignment

There are many environments in the real life that are dealing with electronic data exchange without having a proper mechanism like educational, human resource management and many others. Proposing and developing a standard akin to HL7 would great help in reduction of human efforts as well as data analytics.

Why did the state change the case from medical malpractice to tort law?

In 2006, a Virginia high court held that a brutal assault on a disabled patient is governed by tort law and not by the state’s Medical Malpractice Act. In this assignment, you will analyze this case and identify the scope of medical malpractice and tort law.

The Case

Alcoy was 79 years old when she suffered a stroke that left her physically helpless and mentally damaged. She was moved to a nursing home. Four days later, she was brutally assaulted sexually; the assailant was never identified. Alcoy died several months later. Her estate administrator sued the nursing home for negligence and assault. The nursing home responded that the case was governed by the state’s Medical Malpractice Act, and that Act controlled the extent of the nursing home’s liability. The district court held in favor of the nursing home; the administrator appealed. Virginia high court held that the case is governed by tort law and not by the state’s Medical Malpractice Act (Alcoy v. Valley Nursing Homes, 2006).

Focus of the Summary Project

The report should focus on the interpretation of the accounting information (see Week Two), financial analysis (see Week Four), or economic opportunities (see Week Six). Each report should include an updated income statement and balance sheet (plus other financial statements as appropriate). The financial statements should be prepared in Excel and copied and pasted either into the main text of the report or into an appendix. Your financial reports should be in the same format as the sample reports.

A working knowledge of Excel is essential to your success in this class. If you do not have experience with Excel it is suggested that you begin working through Excel tutorials so that you are ready for the week 2 assignments.

In week two, four and six, you will post your income statement, balance sheet, and financial ratios (week four and six only) in the discussion forum but not your full written report. Also, this is a way for you to test your opinion about your numbers with your fellow students and to get ideas on what numbers may be worth commenting on.
