Describe the role of the forensic mental health professional in research.
This is for ASSIGNMENT 9 M5_A1 AND ASSIGNMENT 10 M5_A2

In this last module, in addition to developing your final research proposal, you will be looking at ethics and diversity within the context of research. Ethics is defined as having three components: respect for the person, beneficence, and justice. For students at all levels, the habit of applying ethics depends on the development of moral sensibilities and critical reasoning and on an approach to problem solving, honing in on both reason and practice. For students in the behavioral sciences, therefore, ethical decision making is essential to proper conduct when conducting research.

The implication here is that for all students who practice the four principles, the consequence is clear—all life’s important problems are dealt with positively by an individual who is in harmony with the self and the community. The end result is the development of a healthy personality and a moral framework guiding research endeavors along a clear path—one not bound by self-interest.

Describe the role of the forensic mental health professional in research.
Articulate and apply knowledge related to ethical and cultural factors which might affect the conduct, design, and interpretation of research.
Discuss the importance and methods of designing valid and reliable research in the behavioral sciences.
Examine the implications for evidence-based practice for the forensic mental health professional.
Discuss issues related to the calculation, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of statistical output.
Identify and apply appropriate ways in which research information may be disseminated.

Assignment M5_A1: A Methodical Review
Using the Argosy University online library resources, locate a research study related to forensic psychology. Present an analysis of the article by addressing the following points:
Provide a brief overview of the problem being studied, the research design, and the participants being used for the study and the general findings of the study.
Identify the research question, independent variable, and dependent variable.
If you were the researcher conducting this study and found that you were not familiar with the particular research population, what steps would you take to prepare yourself to conduct the research with this population?
Was any deception used in this study? If so, why was this deception necessary? If not, do you think that the study would have benefited from any kind of deception?
What steps did the researcher take to protect his or her participants?
What are the limitations of the study’s design and/or implementation?
If you were the researcher, would you have conducted this study the same way in relation to ethics and protection of the participants? If not, what changes would you make?

Why are training exercises important in planning for a bioterrorist attack? How would you use training exercises to help prepare the staff of a hospital from a bioterrorist attack?

Why are training exercises important in planning for a bioterrorist attack? How would you use training exercises to help prepare the staff of a hospital from a bioterrorist attack?
Preparedness and Response to Bioterrorism

There are different categories of weapons of mass effect—chemicals, biological pathogens and toxins, radioactive materials, nuclear devices, and nonconventional high-yield explosives. Out of these, biological weapons are used in a terrorism type called bioterrorism. According to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), there are the six focus areas for preparedness and response to bioterrorism and other outbreaks that are detrimental to public health.

On the basis of your understanding of the topic of bioterrorism and our preparedness to handle the health services requirement during any such attack, answer the following questions:

Which of the categories of weapons of mass effect is the healthcare industry most prepared to deal with? Why? Provide a factual basis for choosing the particular category of weapons. Which of these categories is the healthcare industry least prepared to deal with? Why?
What are the six focus areas, for preparedness and response to bioterrorism and other outbreaks, covered in your course textbook? Are these focus areas still relevant? Why or why not?
Research and explain the meaning of each focus area. Which focus area is the most important and why?
Which focus area would be the most challenging? And why?
Why is communication an important variable within calming fears and suppressing rumors?
Preparing for a bioterrorist attack presents unique challenges in the United States. There are no real wide-scale events you can study to prepare for a bioterrorist attack. In the absence of this experiential knowledge, training exercises are often used. Answer the following questions regarding the training exercises for preparation for bioterrorist attack:

Why are training exercises important in planning for a bioterrorist attack? How would you use training exercises to help prepare the staff of a hospital from a bioterrorist attack?
What are the benefits of real-life training scenarios involving multiple agencies?
Using the Internet, research on Amtrak’s “Operation Rail Safe” program. Would hospitals and medical centers benefit from a program of this nature to aid in their preparation?
Triage is a process developed by the military to cope with large number of victims of combat or disaster situations. In many disaster situations, it becomes necessary to triage patients in order to assess their medical needs and decide how to allocate the resources and staff available to treat the incoming patients. Using the Internet, research on nerve agent “sarin” and answer the following questions in regard to the above process:

What criteria would you use in the emergency room to triage patients with potential exposure to the nerve agent sarin?
How would you classify the incoming patients when triaging them? Why?
You are the chief executive officer (CEO) of a major hospital. A bioterrorist attack just occurred in your city. The ICS has been activated. Despite the infusion of this additional money provided by the government after the event of September 11, 2001, to the healthcare industry, in an effort to prepare the industry for a possible bioterrorist attack, some people feel that the healthcare industry in US is still unprepared for a bioterrorist attack. As a CEO, you need to assess the situation and prepare your hospital to deal with the situation.

Answer the following questions keeping in mind the above information:

Why is the use of an ICS in a hospital important when dealing with a bioterrorist attack? What are the most challenging issues associated with using an ICS in a hospital? Why?
As a healthcare administrator, how would you allocate money and why? How prepared do you think the healthcare industry is to handle a bioterrorist attack? Why or why not?

As a nurse manager, what questions might you have about HR’s role?Since she took this position, nurses have asked her a variety of questions related to paid leave, health insurance coverage, retirement plans, and other important issues.
Discussion: The Role of HR in Health Care Settings

Janet has been working as a nurse manager for a little over six months. Since she took this position, nurses have asked her a variety of questions related to paid leave, health insurance coverage, retirement plans, and other important issues. Each new question causes Janet to wonder whether she is providing her staff with sufficient information. Janet realizes that she needs help answering these questions, and she is curious to see if she can enlist the assistance of someone in the Human Resources department. Despite her experience as a nurse and as a nurse manager, Janet is not sure what kind of support HR can provide, nor how and when she should request their help.

Nurse managers may be uncertain about the roles that HR plays in health care organizations. In addition, many managers are unclear about how HR can support them with the staff function of their managerial responsibilities. As a nurse manager, what questions might you have about HR’s role? Furthermore, how have your previous experiences impacted your perceptions?

To prepare

Reflect upon the role HR has played in your current organization or one with which you are familiar. What interactions have you noticed between HR professionals and other staff in this setting? How do these interactions compare to those of nurse managers and staff that you have observed?

Complete the media survey, “Survey on HR,” found in this week’s Learning Resources. Though this survey is not graded, take careful note of the questions asked and the correct answers.

Review Chapter 1, “The New Human Resource Management Process” in the course text, Human Resource Management: Functions, Applications, & Skill Development, as well as this week’s media, “Introduction to Healthcare Human Resource Management.”

Consider how your perceptions of HR are similar to or different from the roles of HR described in the Learning Resources. How does the role of HR differ from that of a nurse manager?

Adult following Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: Balloon Angioplasty and Intracoronary Stent
Michael is a 56 year old male who has returned to the high dependency acute cardiac care unit following a Balloon Angioplasty and insertion of an Intracoronary Stent. He has a history of Type 2 Non-insulin dependent diabetes and manages this with Metformin. He is on telemetry and is to lie flat for 3 hours post procedure. The femoral artery sheath was removed in theatre, the site compressed and an opsite dressing applied to the site on his left inguinal region. He is currently on half hourly circulation observations. He has an IV of 0.9% Sodium Chloride (1L) / 24 hourly infusing. His initial return to ward observations were HR 80/min, RR 18/min, BP 120/80, Temp 36.9°C. When you perform your next set of observations 30 minutes later Michael’s observations are HR 110/min, RR 20/min, BP 100/70 and Temp 37° C. He reports that he has pain in his groin and has a pain score of 4/10. He also says “I really want to pee but I can’t while I’m lying down.†His feet and hands feel pale, clammy and cool. You lift up the sheet to inspect the catheter site and there is a large pool of fresh blood all over the sheet under Michael and a visible leakage from the site.

Once you have selected:
There are at least three (3) priority problems that the patient is experiencing currently. List three priority problems you have identified from the above data and history. For each problem identified, list as many nursing interventions as you have discovered in your research of the literature. Include a one to two line rationale for each intervention. Submit this one page list with your essay.
Please be aware that the main focus should be the essay itself and not this one page list which is essentially a map or plan of your thinking about the case. We have asked for this page as sometimes students choose incorrect priority problems so this page will allow us to see if it was a problem with identification or prioritisation. As with any academic writing it should be referenced and you can include these references in your main essay reference list. Your main focus should be the essay.
For your essay, you must prioritise the problems you identified and select the two highest priority problems from your list.

The 2000- word essay

• State an overview of the patient’s condition and identify the TWO priority nursing problems. Give a brief plan for the essay topics.
• For the first problem (850 words): Briefly explain how it relates to the patient’s assessment data. You will need to draw on your understanding of pathophysiology to explain the link between the problem and the patient’s signs and symptoms. Identify TWO priority nursing interventions to address the problem. Discuss briefly the nursing interventions you will implement (explain what is involved in implementing the intervention, why it is suitable, any relevant positive or negative aspects/considerations) and support/justify the use of these interventions with reference to current evidence-based literature. Outline the evaluation criteria/data that would indicate that each intervention is improving or resolving the identified problem.
• For the second problem (850 words): Briefly explain how it relates to the patient’s assessment data. You will need to draw on your understanding of pathophysiology to explain the link between the problem and the patient’s signs and symptoms Identify TWO priority nursing interventions to address the problem. Discuss briefly the nursing interventions you will implement (explain what is involved in implementing the intervention, why it is suitable, any relevant positive or negative aspects/considerations) and support/justify the use of these interventions with reference to current evidence-based literature. • Conclusion (150 words): Briefly restate the patient’s condition and problems and how the nursing interventions can benefit the patient’s health.

Medicaid is a state-operated program funded in part by federal funds and in part by state funds.

On the basis of your understanding of the statement, answer the following questions:

Why was Medicaid but not Medicare designed to be state operated?
What factors prove that Medicaid program is being operated by the state?
Conduct an analysis of the Medicaid program of your state and another state from a different region of the country.
What are the main similarities and differences between the two programs?
Are there enough differences to prove that the state and not the federal government operate Medicaid? Discuss.
As a government program, Medicaid has recently been subject to cuts and last minute increases in funding.

Note: Present your answers in the context of Medicaid payment and reimbursement policies.

Why is Medicaid subject to seemingly constant cutbacks?
Are these cutbacks due to the relationships between the state and federal governments and the populations being served, or just the rising cost of healthcare in general? Discuss.
