In this Discussion, you examine the research related to a therapy based on cognitive or cognitive behavior theory to determine its effectiveness.

To prepare:

  • Recall the client from the case study you have been using in this course. You will apply your research for this Discussion to that client.
  • Select one therapy from the following: cognitive behavior therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, or reality therapy.
  • Conduct a search in the Walden Library for one peer-reviewed research study about the effectiveness of the therapy you selected.
    • Note: You must select a study that has not already been used by a colleague in the Discussion. Each student is required to identify a unique research study.
  • Remember when looking for studies to take into account your client’s age and developmental stage and presenting problem.

By Day 3

Post:

  • Provide the reference for the study you found using APA guidelines.
  • Briefly paraphrase, in 2 to 3 sentences, the methodological context (i.e., research method, how data was collected, and the instruments used) of the study and the findings.
  • Evaluate the findings in terms of its applicability or appropriateness for the client in your case study.
  • Determine whether you would use or not use the therapy you selected for the client in your selected case study (consider how culturally relevant it is, how aligned it is with social work ethics, etc.) and explain why.

There are significant differences in the ability of individuals to perform complex motor skills. Discuss how the different divisions of the motor system contribute to performing complex motor skills, such as hitting a baseball. In addition, based on information from the chapter, discuss relatively how much individual differences (between people) in complex motor skill ability is likely due to genetics, plasticity due to practice, and/or variance in sensory abilities.

Many research studies suggest that male brains are different than female brains and that boys learn differently than girls. There even is evidence to suggest that at a young age, girls hear better than boys. This may significantly impact learning, especially when boys and girls are in the same classrooms. In addition to very real (though not always present) brain and learning differences, there are stereotypes about differences in the cognitive ability of boys and girls. And as seen in previous weeks, stereotyping can lead to behavioral differences on the part of both learners and teachers.

The preceding issues relate to a topic of importance and debate in education today: the very structure of the educational experience. For example, should boys and girls be segregated in the classroom, acknowledging brain and learning differences? Or, does gender segregation only reinforce the historical stereotypes about the differences in cognitive abilities between males and females? There is significant evidence for both sides of the argument.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review Chapter 11 in the course text, Gender: Psychological Perspectives. Focus on the gender-related differences and similarities in issues related to school, education, and careers.
  • Review the research information (use the Research tab) found on the National Association for Single Sex Public Education website. Focus on the information related to use of gender differences from a psychological and biological basis but also look at related societal issues.
  • Review the article, “Science Faculty’s Subtle Gender Biases Favor Male Students.”
  • Consider how being educated in same-sex classrooms might affect the learner in the present, as well as in the future, educationally, psychologically, and socially. Also think about the impact there might be on society as a whole if everyone was educated in same-sex classrooms.

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 3

Post an argument for or against the use of single-sex classrooms. Justify your position. Consider the effect on individual learners (educationally, psychologically, and socially—in the present and in the future of the individual), as well as the effect on society. Consider schooling at all levels: elementary, middle school, high school, and college. If your name begins with N–Z, take the “Against Single-Sex Classroom” side.

Self-Management Project

The behavior that will need to be changed is poor eating habits. Instead of eating healthy food I eat food high in sugars and carbohydrates as well as fast foods that are processed and because I work at a desk, daily exercise is limited. The problem is low exercise and unhealthy eating. This is due to low motivation resulting in poor health outcomes. Through the self-management project the goal will be to increase healthy behavior, such as eating more healthy. Increasing healthy behavior will require decreasing snacking and caloric consumption and increasing water consumption and exercise. The end result will be weight loss and a healthier lifestyle.

I have attempted to live a healthier lifestyle in the past with little luck. The behavior will be observed and recorded in a daily journal. The amount of calories consumed in a day will be measured as well as the level of exercise. Every day the actual calories consumed will be recorded after the last meal for the day. Calorie consumption will be less than 1200 calories per day. The daily journal will be used to measure change in the behavior after introducing the reinforcer.

In week 3 I did a baseline data chart with a short essay (as shown). Based on the chart and short essay, I need a 1400 to 1750 word essay with the following instructions:

This cumulative assignment allows you to consider everything you have learned over the past 5 weeks in an attempt to change a behavior of your own. This overall process is similar to what a board-certified behavior analyst would compete with a new client.

  • Write a 1,400- to 1,750-word paper that outlines an intervention plan for changing that behavior, in which you discuss the following:

  • Describe the target behavior.
  • Outline the dimensions of measurement/baseline measurement.
  • Describe the function of the baseline behavior.
  • Outline the goals of the behavioral change.
  • Propose a behavior intervention plan based on goals.
    • Provide a minimum of 2 antecedent changes.
    • Provide 4 to 5 consequence modifications. Choose consequences based on at least four of the following: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, negative punishment, positive punishment, and extinction.
  • Describe any potential barriers to treatment, as well as how you would overcome these barriers.
  • Describe the expected outcome if the behavior intervention plan was implemented and followed.
  • Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

In this assignment, you will continue to discuss your work with the client you presented in your Unit 5 Case Conceptualization paper.

Complete this assignment by addressing the following topics in a four-part format.

Part 1: Interventions

List the three goals you formulated for this client and presented in your Unit 5 paper. (If your instructor provided feedback or comments about your goals on that assignment, you can include revised goals here.)

For each goal, list one specific counseling intervention you used during your work with this client to help him or her make progress toward that goal. Each intervention must be evidence based; you will need to support your choice of intervention with reference to the current professional literature and research showing its effectiveness.

For each intervention you list, include the following:

  • Discuss how you introduced this intervention into the counseling session and how the client responded.
  • Describe how the intervention is reflective of your specific theoretical approach, drawing from the key concepts and assumptions of that theory.
  • Discuss your rationale for selecting the intervention, in terms of its appropriateness for your specific client and his or her presenting issues. Address all sociocultural issues that you considered when introducing this intervention into your work with the client.
  • Include at least one reference to a current article in the professional literature that supports the use of the intervention as being effective with this type of client and/or presenting issues.

Part 2: Ethical and Legal Issues

Discuss any ethical or legal issues that emerged during your work with this client. (If no such issues arose, then discuss the types of ethical or legal issues that might emerge when working with this type of client and/or these presenting issues.)

Discuss the steps you took to address the ethical or legal issues. Refer to the specific standard from the ACA Code of Ethics that relates to any ethical issue that you describe. Include reference to specific laws or regulations that apply to these types of situations.

Part 3: Client Progress and Counseling Outcome

For each of the goals you developed, describe the ways in which the client demonstrated progress during the time you worked with him or her. Include specific changes that the client reported to you, changes that you observed during sessions, and/or information that you gathered from other sources (such as self-report measures or assessments or reports from third parties that you gathered with the client’s written consent).

  • If the client showed progress toward a goal, what do you believe led to this change? For example, was a specific intervention particularly effective? Did the relationship you formed with the client, or some interaction between you and the client during a session, have an impact on how the client changed?
  • If the client did not show the progress you anticipated for the goal, what is your understanding of this? Would you consider a different theoretical approach, or different types of interventions, based on your review of the work you have done with the client?

What is your overall evaluation of the work you did with this client? If you were going to make recommendations to the next therapist who works with this client (or with a client similar to this one), what would you suggest, in terms of the main approach, goals, and interventions that the therapist might consider?

Support your ideas with reference to the current professional literature.

Part 4: Future Development

Discuss the progress you have made as a counselor during your fieldwork experience.

  • What are your main strengths?
  • What specific areas of knowledge and self-awareness have you developed?
  • What has been particularly challenging for you?

Thinking ahead to the work you will be doing in gaining your post-degree hours towards licensure, what are three specific skills or areas of knowledge that you would like to focus on?

  • How will you select an internship or clinical experience that will assist you in meeting these goals?
  • How do you plan to maximize your supervision experience in your post-degree internship, based on what you have experienced during supervision so far?
  • What specific license, certification, and/or credentials will you be seeking after graduation?

As you move forward in your career, how will you align your continued professional development and your clinical practice with the standards we have for mental health counselors?

  • Refer to specific standards from the ACA Code of Ethics, as well as to other national and state standards that guide the work counselors do.
  • Include a description of the professional organizations to which you’ll belong and how this membership will be important to your professional and career development.
  • List three specific areas of professional development that you will be exploring in the future.

2.1 You are a professional counselor specializing in the treatment of children. You have decided to implement an 8-week parenting program for divorcees. How would you teach parenting skills from the perspective of either (choose) Erikson’s theory or Piaget’s theory with the participants regarding each age level of needs: preschool, school-age, and adolescent. Some of the participants hope to begin family sessions with you once the program has ended. How will you evaluate the impact of the divorce on children in each age level: preschool, school-age, and adolescent?

This discussion question meets the following CACREP Standard: 2.F.3.f. Systemic and environmental factors that affect human development, functioning, and behavior.

2.2 Single-parent households and an increase in women in the workforce have both contributed to a significant increase in alternative care giving situations like day care or nursery school. Based on your understanding of attachment theory, how does this affect children? Now, discuss ethical and cultural strategies for promoting resilience, development, and wellness in early childhood.

This discussion question meets the following CACREP Standard: 2.F.3.i. Ethical and culturally relevant strategies for promoting resilience and optimum development and wellness across the lifespan.

3.1 A parent is at his or her wit’s end over a seeming lack of ambition and drive in his 8-year-old son and has come to you for help. The parent reports that all the child wants to do is play video games. As a professional counselor, how might you separately counsel both the parent and the child? Formulate your response around your understanding of physical development and multiple-intelligences theories as well as parenting styles.

3.2  It is said that children’s social behaviors and attitudes are influenced by what they see on TV, whether it be violence, prosocial skills, or a distorted view of women and minorities. Do you agree or disagree? Why? Support your response with research and personal anecdotes.

4.1 A healthy body image is a critical issue in adolescence. Obesity, anorexia, and bulimia are severe threats to an adolescent’s well-being. What physical and psychological factors play a role in succumbing to these threats? What preventative measures can be taken? Support your response with research.

This discussion question meets the following CACREP Standards:

2.F.3.d. Theories and etiology of addictions and addictive behaviors.

2.F.3.g. Effects of crisis, disasters, and trauma on diverse individuals across the lifespan.

4.2 What are the effects of crises, disasters, and traumas on culturally diverse adolescents? Provide at least two examples in your response.

This discussion question meets the following CACREP Standards:

2.F.3.d. Theories and etiology of addictions and addictive behaviors.

2.F.3.g. Effects of crisis, disasters, and trauma on diverse individuals across the lifespan.

5.1 How do the many socioemotional changes of adolescence impact family systems? Respond to the question theoretically and then provide a minimum of two examples, without sharing names if they are personally known to you.

5.2 According to the “storm and stress” view of adolescence, sexual behavior is one way for adolescents to rebel against their parents. The text suggests that research on adolescent sexuality may not support this. Why or why not?

6.1 Erikson’s stages of adulthood include young adulthood, middle adulthood, and maturity. Please provide an example of each stage, including the main task of each.

6.2 What role do smoking, drinking alcohol, and nutrition play in adult development? Create some possible combinations of these and then respond based on them. For example, how might a person who smokes but eats well develop in adulthood?

This discussion question meets the following CACREP Standard: 2.F.3.f. Systemic and environmental factors that affect human development, functioning, and behavior..

7.1 How do the physical and societal effects of aging impact retirement decisions for older adults?

This discussion question meets the following CACREP Standard: 2.F.3.i. Ethical and culturally relevant strategies for promoting resilience and optimum development and wellness across the lifespan.

7.2 Grandparenting can be highly rewarding. Many grandparents, though, unexpectedly become guardians and raise small children. How might this responsibility affect their normal course of adult development? What components might require transitions? How would a professional counselor encourage these older guardians in their new roles?

This discussion question meets the following CACREP Standard: 2.F.3.f. Systemic and environmental factors that affect human development, functioning, and behavior.

8.1 What types of resources would you use in helping a client deal with their own mortality? Research and post a minimum of three websites or other resources that might be beneficial in helping a client deal with death, dying, loss, and/or questions regarding immortality. Include an annotation as to what the resource contains and why you think it might be helpful.

This discussion question meets the following CACREP Standard: 2.F.3.i. Ethical and culturally relevant strategies for promoting resilience and optimum development and wellness across the lifespan.

8.2 Describe Stroebe’s dual process model of coping with loss. Why do you think this “balance” is important in helping one recover from grief? How do the different needs and abilities of clients affect the counseling interventions?

This discussion question meets the following CACREP Standard: 2.F.3.i. Ethical and culturally relevant strategies for promoting resilience and optimum development and wellness across the lifespan.

Each question need to be answered by itself and have a cite in the answer. Must have 150-200 words in the answer. Should look something like this

1. question how was your day???

Answer it was good.

2.question

Human beings are fundamentally social. In this discussion, we will consider connection—from attraction to dissolution, and liking to love—by providing advice regarding various relationship concerns.

To inform your thinking on this topic, begin by reading “Transmission of Aggressions through Imitation of Aggressive Models” (Bandura, Ross, & Ross, 1961), “”From Jerusalem to Jericho”: A Study of Situational and Dispositional Variables in Helping Behavior” (Darley & Batson, 1973), “Bystander Intervention in Emergencies: Diffusion of Responsibility” (Darley & Latane, 1968), “The General Aggression Model: Theoretical Extensions to Violence, (DeWall, Anderson, & Bushman, 2011), “Group Inhibition of Bystander Intervention in Emergencies” (Latane & Darley, 1968), and “Understanding the Psychology of Bullying: Moving Toward a Social-Ecological Diathesis-Stress Model” (Swearer & Hymel, 2015).

Then, imagine that you are an educator.  Describe a hypothetical incident of observed antisocial behavior (bullying, relational aggression (i.e., “mean girls”), etc.).  Interpret relevant social psychological theory and research to explain the case study you outlined, and assemble key insight from research on prosocial behavior to generate a plan for addressing this specific situation.

Your initial post should be 500-1000 words in length and must contain at minimum required course resources as applicable.  Additional credible references are encouraged.
